I think it very much depends on the context.
I like to think I'm fairly classy and that's the impression I like to give (especially on here)
However one of my favourite comfort foods is scotch pie, chips and beans!
In that context I'm not classy at all. |

Its an act of basic humanity. And would make him more classy than all the people who walk by and ignore.
Too many want praise or recognition, very few people are humble and its rather sad that something that should be second nature would be seen as kindness.

I was in Glasgow last night .....as i left the venue...i gave £3 worth of loose change i had in my pocket as i approached my car to an unfortunate Gentleman ..
Would that be an act of basic humanity ..? kindness ? or classy ?

Unfortunately I believe the art of classyness has been nearly lost in today's society, although it's still a trait we all respect and admire. Maybe I'm old fashioned or it's down to what was indoctrinated into me over my long service in the Army.,
To me being a classy gentleman means being intelligent (and not always in an academic way, there are various forms of intelligence), being polite (Take a genuine interest in the people around you and be considerate of their needs),courteous and distinguished.
Be courteous (Hold doors for people, pull out chairs for women when they sit, do the things you've seen classy men do in old movies these are the missing traits in today's world).
Be confident and comfortable with yourself.
Be clean. Grooming is essential to class. Your hair and fingernails should be short and neat. Your body and clothes should look and smell clean with nice aftershave.
Be thoughtful. Think before you speak or act. Forethought is a classy virtue for gentlemen.
Be modest. Everyone will know who and what you are based on what you do. Classy gentlemen aren't cocky or arrogant.
Have good posture. Stand and sit straight up. Communicate your positive attributes with your body language.
Dress the part. Wear clothes that fit the situation. Your clothes should be neat and fashionable, but understated.
Honor your word and keep your promises. Actions speak louder than words, but to be a classy gentleman ones words are as important as his actions. Always be punctual for a date, Order the ladies food for her and test taste the wine before it's poured.
What you should NOT do:
Don't be loud. Keep your voice and your whole persona toned down.
Don't wear your best tracksuit with a baseball cap on back to front!!

I would agree with most of the comments here and only add that classy for me would also describe someone who has a quiet confidence about them, someone who deals with situations coolly, confidently, succinctly, and above all appropriately - never over the top, or specifically never to draw attention to themselves, or to unfairly put so one down.
We could all do with aspiring to bit a little more classy each day!

most of whats written here is an attempt at a chivalric code and if thats your interpretation of classy so be it. Much of what you have written dosnt fit with modern society. If I was to order my fem friends meal she would slap me senseless. Times have moved on since do everything for the wee woman. In an equal society if you would lay your coat on a puddle for a fem you should do the same for a man.. |

Although I agree with some of your points to me, some are 'manners' 'polite things to do'.
What about being yourself?
Some people I find classy are unconventional and would not fit in a labelled box!
But again everyone has their own understanding of the word.

The question was what to me is classy so that is my perception not an attempt at chivalry at all. I still believe impeccable manners and how you present and hold yourself counts towards classy. Yes things have moved but not all for the better though. Yes I believe in equality but believe a lady still likes to be treated like a lady and should be. |

I don't believe one needs money to be classy. In a nutshell to me it's how you hold yourself and not been up your own behind. A combination of pride in your appearance and having mutual non judgemental respect for others and some good old fashioned manners thrown in. |
