The Met office decided to start naming storms after a really bad one a few years ago

The first one that was given a name was Abigail last November

There is a list of names for them already chosen from suggestions given by members of the public and swap between male and female names.

The next ones will be Conor then Doris then Ewan and so on...

I belive that it originated in America in the 40's. US military weather casters used to name storms after their girlfriends wives mothers etc, however it became confusing when there was no consensus on which storm was being referred to when multiple storms were across the radar. It was decided to name storms for the following year A-Z in advance. So long as the storm satisfies a certain set of criteria it automatically gets the next name on the list alternating male female.

UK only started doing this last year officially to make it easier for weather intelligence agencies to report on multiple storms.

Think it rotates between male and female.

They are named in Alphabetical order, and if storm season starts with a female name then the next is a male. They have already predetermined the names for this season sure it's on met office website http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/barometer/uk-storm-centre
