The ones I've say in the last few years and I feel are the best are two really random ones.
Dead Silence - Just felt like a good old-fashioned horror film. No in your face gore or shocks.
13 Sins - I'm pretty sure this is a remake or a spin on another film, but I really enjoyed it. No big-name stars and an unusual twist.

It Follows for creepy, modern day stalk and kill with a supernatural twist.
Southbound for a fucked up series of interconnected stories.
Crimson Peak for a lavish ghost story.
Deliver Us From Evil (Eric Bana) for a good, modern demonic possession movie.
The Boy, pretty much just because Lauren Cohan is in it.
The Witch for slow burning, atmospheric dread.
There are some excellent shorts online too such as 2AM and The Smiling Man. |

Cannot remember the last time I watched a horror that actually scared me.
Heavily into that genre at one time and watched so many also read so many that I don't spook very easy.
Maybe because I am a creature of the night myself I realise all that American zombie/monster stuff is a pile of shite
The films that have any credibility do not feature monsters, zombies, vampyres etc but real people who do the hurting and I don't mean the Scream/Halloween type slasher films.

Crimson Peak and The Witch are both really beautifully shot, although obviously very different stylistically. I also really love A Field In England - no gore, but definitely the most unsettling thing I've seen in years. |

"Green Room is nappy wearing stuff
Watched that a few days ago - yup, it's fucking grim! In a good way! "
All the more effective as Anton Yelchin died tragically not long after it came out.
There are some excellent French New Wave Horror movies that combine explicit violence and gore with beautiful camera work and well thought out ideas. A few people have mentioned Martyrs already, there's A Switchblade Romance, Inside and Livid which are all excellent.
We also love Rob zombie's movies. They're so stylistically appealing and we love that he always has his wife in his movies, it's rather sweet. House of 1000 Corpses is like one of those extreme haunt rides they have in America, his Halloween movies are among the better remakes and do interesting things with the characters and Lords of Salem is a much more restrained, occult horror. And you finally see Sheri Moon naked in it. |

Rob Zombies movies or the ones I've seen are believable because they feature sick people and not a supernatural entity you don't see.
Majority of that shit actually happens on a daily basis in the States |
