I've done it and found out lots of fascinating things about my family. One ancestor drowned in the Forth and Clyde canal, another died of a wound to the throat. I'd love to find out the back stories there!
I got started when I got family papers after my gran died and was hooked. I've found Irish, Highland and Fife ancestry so far |

We done this after my grandfather died.
3 hours after he died a letter arrived from Barnardo's regarding long lost family members (he was adopted at birth)
Discovered that his mother was pregnant out of wedlock, an event which coincided with Lord Mountbatten and George VI visiting the country house where she was a housemaid
We already knew about the old auntie that ran a bunch of brothels in Denniston |

Found a letter from a colonial secretary to London specificly naming my ancestor as someone who had attacked native american unprovoked and was shipping cheap rum with no over sight. Last record was of him joining the us reveloution. Probably to avoid being arrested.
Interesting but probably not a nice man |

In explanation, my good friend is of Cuban extraction. I think I must be too cause I understand him perfectly. It's a worry! Lol. So far the research hasn't thrown anything up though. Unless Cuba is near Greenock??

I've never had an interest in family history, it's not my life and doesn't affect me in the slightest.
But I do know a few things, my dad's side came from Ireland but was way way before Willie Wallace was even born, and ma mums side is from russia.
Unlike many people a don't consider myself to be part Irish or Russian just so I can feel a bit special and connected to something I know nothing about.
I'm Scottish 100% nothing else certainly not British |

I done mine not to long ago, no supprises my treat granda came from Ireland. One thing that did strike me though when I looked at the census is it asked how many children are alive and hoe many are dead. Someone in the same block of flats had 13 dead children and 2 still alive
I've not been able to trace back my family over in ireland as my family name is one of the most popular irish surnames and him, and my great great gran and granda all happen to have very popular first names as well. |

Well the real surprise in my family, was that my paternal gran, and her sister, were born in America. And still on my father's side, a great uncle that nobody had heard of, and the fact that there are cousins of myself and brothers we know nothing about.

The thing that has struck me so far from the census about my family is how many of them were living together. Now unless it was a mansion which I very much doubt..there were 15 at one time. grandparents, parents, children, siblings and their spouses and parents. Must have been murder..and NO en suite!! |

When i started looking at mine im sure some of the information in the census of the time documented the number of windows in each house. That was an indication of the number of rooms as they assume one window per room.
There was granny maw and paw about 5 weans plus a lodger in a 3 windowed house! |

Until the window tax was repealed in 1851 people used to brick up windows in their property to avoid this property tax. That's probably why those details are on the census. You can still see lots of examples of blocked off windows in George St in Edinburgh. I'm thinking that might be the case in my family. I HOPE it is anyway!! |

Hence the term 'daylight robbery'. |
