Hi, just wondered if I could pick your brains up there in Scotland!
We hold a camping weekend every year and the only thing that puts a bit of a bend in it is the bastard midgies!
So, as I know you have a major problem with them up there, I was just wondering if you have any great ideas that actually work for protecting against them? |

Create your own trap, you will need:
1 2ltr plastic drinks bottle
1 gram yeast
1/4 cup sugar
1 cup warm water
1 black plastic bag
Scissors
Sticky tape |

Believe it or not: try using a "dryer sheet"... Being from Florida, those lil' bastard are fierce! Yup: the Avon stuff works, but shy of staying indoors... That's the ONLY sure-fire remedy! Just rub yerself with it,& relax! Or: Garlic. That seems to repel most "vampires",& possible pulls aswell.! Good luck: it's horrible to deal with: God forbid they swarm! Scary actually: was once attacked by a swarm in MY truck,as my bird(girlfriend!)& I tried to find a clearing in which to play ! Never experienced anything like that before! So try the dryer sheets: you'll be amazed! |

Well, there's a few to try, we'd heard of the Avon one, but had mixed reports, guess we'll have to try them out and see.
Have tried the usual bug sprays, but, as mentioned, some can be rather potent, and not much fun if you are tent-hopping, especially if you get all sweaty and it runs into your eyes lol.... god knows what it might be doing to condoms! |

.
It all depends on area location, some places are far worse than others
.
when we are out stalking (shooting deer) we use "Tabard" which contains deet, or if available I also sometimes use "Lifesystem Expedition Plus 100+" both contain deet and will prevent against ticks too and they don't produce a smell that deer can pick up at 200 yards.
.
skin so soft makes you stink like a poof and leaves your skin feeling very greasy, smidge the midge may/may not work but has a smell that deer pick up on.
.
If you travel up north of Inverness around Torridon - nothing will protect you bar a midge net
.
When you are looking for a repellent make sure you find one that repels "ticks" as well and remember a midge bite is annoying and will make you itch but a tick bite can leave you with an incurable disease that will trouble you a lifetime.
.
you have to weigh up the pro's and cons of wearing a repellent containing deet |

"Stay away from any water! You'll always find more midgies near water.
For some reason, I never ever get bitten by midgies and I've no idea why! X
K "
I'm the same, they don't bother me much but my poor Mum gets eaten alive. I've heard SOS is good but never tried it. |

The best thing by far is the midgy net you buy from outdoor places there only a couple of pound.goes over your head and covers your neck aswell.Might not look great in it but it's a life saver for Scottish midges |

Midge hoods for staying outdoors if in a really bad area.
Skin so Soft or Smidge etc otherwise.
Clothes with no gaps, those little bastards find them
Citronella candles.
Campfire smoke
Go Outdoors sells a battery operated fan with disposable midge killer cartridges - not sure exactly what chemical it disperses around the tent but it works.
Avoid camping near water and vegetation.
Best place is where there will be a breeze.
Good luck. |
