I think I get what you mean... we are all diverse people ergo we are all going to have varying opinions but there is no need to express that differing opinion aggressively or sarcastically. You can acknowledge and disagree without that... at least I think that's what you mean
... and of course it's great to hear all those differing opinions are... they can be very enlightening too.

freedom of speech in the UK? lol
look how people reacted to Trump, bunch of fools, don't think most get what free speech is really about, because people take offense to easily.
people like to say what they think but don't like when people disagree, some people even take it as act of violence and want safe spaces lol |

There is a line between free speech and hate speech, which usually gets crossed on Fab on the so-called "football" threads.
Whether this behaviour is part and parcel of the individuals' make up on a day to day basis, or one that surfaces following the involvement of alcohol, who knows, suffice to say, it does show the perpetrators up in their true colours, be they red, white and blue, or green, white and gold. I often wonder how many sensible folk take advantage of those threads to add to their block lists. I know I do.
I prefer to converse, and hopefully meet, people who know that it is 2016, not 1916, or 1690. |

and i agree but there are people that don't know the difference and take offensive too it, or quickly jump on the bandwagon and brand you as some sort of phobic, racist or whatever just because you don't agree with them, or you might not like what they do.
hate speech is a little different it's quite easy to tell the difference.
what do you folks think about the guy that was arrested for teaching his dog to salute Hitler? |

Why isn't hate speech the same thing as free speech? Surely the're the same thing? - when I have heard people mention this thing called hate speech it normally refers to things they don't want to hear. What is hate speech? And how is it different to free speech? Answers on a postcard. Lol.

Ok, just my own personal opinion....
Free speech - being able to say what you want about something. Even if it's negative.
Hate speech - deliberately saying something that's designed to cause offense.
There is no need for the nasty or hurtful things but sometimes arguments and comments can be taken the wrong way by someone even when they weren't meant to be interpreted in a nasty way.

It still baffles me how some adults still actually get offended by mere Words! I mean come on, they're only words it's not like they are life threatening. Grow up and get on with it rather than get offended and having a whinge which in all seriousness, won't change anything. |

So, hypothetically speaking, if someone insults you about your age, weight, or sexual activities, you wouldn't be hurt or offended?
I find that hard to believe. |

The saying sticks and stones make break my bones. But names will never hurt me. Springs to mind.
Freedom of speech is different when it becomes aggressive. Or threatening.
Offensive is a grey area depending on the individual beliefs. |

It is actually possible to disagree but not be judgemental. Some people enjoy healthy debate and others simply court controversy and would start a row in an empty house. We debate points passionately and vigorously in my home but the kettle goes on and a cuppa always appears at the end of it all and we laugh. If I'm getting nowhere I am usually heard to say "knickers" and I leave the arena!
Some people take opinions far, far too seriously and rehash the same point over, and over again. The forum and status updates are no different.
Vive la difference!

Thank you for that as I never got what people mean by this distinction, between free speech and hate speech.
But I am a little confused, as if I say something that's designed to cause offense. which according to you is hate speech, isn't it the same the thing as free speech which you define as being able to say what you want about something. Even if it's negative.
I am guessing hate speech really means, if I find it offensive = hate speech.
so it does not have any objective meaning, it is just a subjective term, dependent on the feelings of the offended. which is why a man was sent to jail for criticising feminism on twitter, etc, as the term hate speech has now come to be used as a tool to silence those who's opinions we disagree with, which explains why the UK debated banning Donald Trump. lol.
"Why isn't hate speech the same thing as free speech? Surely the're the same thing? - when I have heard people mention this thing called hate speech it normally refers to things they don't want to hear. What is hate speech? And how is it different to free speech? Answers on a postcard. Lol.

Theres no diffrence its how what is written or spoken is percieved that defines if its hate or free. Thats why alot of people say there is no freedom of speech mearly the allowed perception of it. Same as the govt now tells us what is going to happen rather than what the people say they want to happen. |

Two points:
1: My reply was aimed at the person who gave you the thumbs up, and who I (mistakenly) thought better of.
2: My experience of people who make the kind of statements on free/hate speech that you did, are usually the kind of people who don't care who they offend.
As I have said previously, the only positive I take from threads like this is knowing who to add to my block list. |

Yes I would. Isis, is a repugnant, murderous, apocalyptic group of cowards and thugs who represent the worst of humanity. however the way to deal with bad ideas and religions etc. isn't to ban them, as that does not stop their ideas. All that will do, is cause them to flourish underground as they currently do now. the way to deal with bad ideas, is to expose them to the light of reason and evidence, so everyone can see how deplorable their notions are. so yes anyone who wants to promote Isis go for it, as their illogicality will be exposed for all to see, as Voltaire said: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"

Like I said, I will defend ANYONES right to free speech, AS LONG AS IT IS NOT DESIGNED TO CAUSE OFFENSE OR DISTRESS.
So if ISIS was a PEACEFUL and NON-VIOLENT group seeking their objectives via diplomacy and peaceful means, then yes, I would defend their right to free speech.
But they aren't.
They are attempting to force their wishes and doctrine on others and to murder innocent people to advance their own aims. |

I agree with you Kola. There used to be some cracking exchanges there. But alas, these days there are too many litigious people out there who moan at something they don't like. Hence new laws.
If people grew thicker skins and spent the time exposing these people for what they are, maybe the world would be a better place |

But then I guess it's no different to the war propaganda put out and perpetuated during the first and second world wars.
It was designed to back up one side.
I'm not saying for one second that it wasn't necessary but just to illustrate that it's nothing new.
But again, the Nazis were espousing hatred and death to a minority.
If only people could learn to live and co-exist peacefully.
Guess that will never happen.

Free speech should (almost) always be allowed. The only exception, imo, should be when it's inciting violence. Other than that it should be accepted, ignored or challenged as you deem appropriate. |

I think you misunderstand what free speech is.
your comments seem to imply that if what you hear is acceptable to you, then it should be allowed.
Whereas because you do not want to hear statements which are DESIGNED TO CAUSE OFFENSE OR DISTRESS. - which of course is subjective and down to your own interpretation. Then such statements should be banned.
this view is not free speech it is in fact an authoritarian view, which seeks to limit discourse and is has been espoused by every repressive regime in history. the west was able to flourish by allowing free speech, which allowed the discussion on ending slavery, giving women the vote, legalising homosexuality, all of which at the time would have caused massive offence to large sections of the population. but it was only through allowing discussions that people did not want to hear that progress was made.
The problem here is that free speech does not refer to hearing things you want to hear. Free speech refers to comments you do not want to hear or disagree with, which in this case would be arguments that are violent and non-peaceful for example.
tolerating or defending views you agree with, is not free speech.
free speech is allowing and defending the expression of views and ideas you disagree with, such as violent and non-peaceful views etc.
ISIS have no right to do what they do, but they have every right to say whatever they want. as does everyone.
"
