A world of my own

I'm in the office on my own most of today. Not long recieved a big delivery. Lorry driver says I just dump the pallet love where do you want it.. fair enough I thought. Until he then sat in his van for 10 minutes while I was unloading all these 6kg boxes on my own so the pallet didn't block the road.

Then in the yard, 4 taxi drivers standing having a smoke and not one thought maybe we should offer to help her. Instead one or them thought it a good time to say he saw me in the supermarket at the weekend and did I live out that way??

Really??

Where have all the gentlemen gone?

It wasn't but had I been standing there I would have offered. Had any of my son's been there they would have offered to help someone. Is it that men are worried it looks like a come on these days? Or are they worried they offend?

I can't speak for all lorry drivers but I've been a driver's mate out in lorry's and I know alot will say it's up to the people we deliver to, to unload the truck.

Personally I would've done it for you.I don't think they would think it's a come on or that they would offend I think it's just they couldn't be arsed

I don't think it's dead. There are lots of guys that would have helped without a second thought.

You should have asked him to help out a damsel in distress and I'm sure he would have. Or maybe it's a health and safety thing like everything seems to be these days and he's not allowed to in case he gets an injury

God thats bloody awful. I go out my way to help our delivery drivers and it goes both ways. They appreciate the help and have done me a few favours as well especially when I'm day off. They wheel every box right into our corridor for me if its just the girls on that day.

your fairly spot on with that, a lot of companies will not allow their employees to lift or assist, same as bin men have regulations with bins

same as "unbelievably" "firemen" cannot go to certain locations on rescue as it puts them at risk

far too many companies are covering their own arses

Any decent guy would offer to help ...i do it all the time in town or wherever if a lady is struggling with something.....sometimes i even just take my neighbours bags off her n carry them even tho she moans "" i can do it myself""

I get the health and safety points and actually I hate that Im probably feeding a stereotype that women need help. I managed fine. It would have just been nice had if been offered. Regardless of gender, had I been standing out there I'd have offered to help anyone.

Don't base chivalry on lorry and taxi drivers. I'd get banned for using the words I want to describe them with.

I came out of a supermarket today, to find a private hire car sitting behind me, hazard lights on, blocking me and two other cars in disabled spaces in. The car was empty, but as I got to my car, a guy walked over and went in the driving seat. I thought he was going to move, but instead, he retrieved his phone and went back inside. I sounded my horn, and he came back over, looked at me, showed the middle finger, and walked off again! Just at that, a staff member came over and said he was pissed because someone had skipped a fare, and was phoning the police. I told the supermarket guy that if the taxi didn't move, I'D be the one phoning the police, so off he trotted, got the taxi driver, who GRUDGINGLY moved his car, and and stood swearing at me as I drove off. You can now guess some of the words I can't post here about taxi drivers...

Anyway. Despite my disability, I still do my best to carry things for women, hold doors open, let others go before me in queues, etc.

Chivalry isn't dead, but it has had a hard kick in the nuts, from delivery men and taxi drivers.

the only thing some people have to consider is that;

what may look like a perfectly healthy guy may not be the case

many people with disabilities look perfectly healthy from eye contact but that does not mean to say the person is in good health, may have serious injury, broken back, back trouble or any illness or disability, so best not to tar all with same brush.

It wouldn't have said it was chivalry that was missing but just common good old fashioned politeness/courtesy of the gentlemen offering to help... you could have declined, as you have proven you were capable but the lack of an offer is wrong,

When was the last time anyone held a door open for someone (male or female), when was the last time anyone sent a message on here just to make someone smile, just a complimentary message... no hidden agenda ...

I sincerely believe that those who post after this will all do the above... but I wouldn't expect anyone to admit openly on a public forum that that don't do these things...

With a lot of woman wanting to be seen as equals in the workplace and in general lots of guys have learnt not to offer help or advice unless asked.

There's too much "I'm not paid to do that" in the world nowadays. I always try to help a woman when I can because I was raised that way, if they don't want help they will be quick enough in telling you but at least you made the effort and in my book it's always nice to be nice whether it's appreciated or not
