My thinkin on this is that having it on the hand your less likely to be using means you can check the time while also us in your good hand for do in something with a bit more precision/strength/accuracy etc.

Originally...due to the winding mechanism being easier to wind if on the left.
But either wrist is ok to wear it on theres no rule says what one you have to.
