One of the finest politicians of the modern age. Never got the credit he deserved due to his battle against alcoholism. Had he won that fight the liberals would have been pushing for government. Incredible achievement amongst many others. Possibly the most honest politician you'll ever see.

"Gone at 55. Might not have agreed with his politics, but he was a very nice, very intelligent guy with a brilliant sense of humour.
R.I.P. Big man."
Sad Loss, He was the strongest leader of the Lib Dems and as above I did not agree with his politics but I did agree with his opposition to the Iraq war, he stood his ground during that time of conflict.
Lets not point the finger at alcohol until the reason of death is disclosed. 55 years old is such an early death which should make us all focus on what may be ahead for us all. |

A true politician..........managed to be a real Westminster debater whilst retaining a focus on representing his constituents in a large area a long way from London ......must've some hours travelling!
Intelligent, witty, warm, democratic to the last........I was always amazed how he was able to give time and credence to all no matter their political views - we could all learn from him.
No matter your politics he made you proud to be Scottish.
