Just finished a wee mini tour of Scotland up to Aberdeen for a couple of nights then 3 nights over on the West coast between Fort William and Inverness!
Cracking break, great weather, great laugh and great scenery!
There was a few things that annoyed me though!
1) Loads of places don't open till March! Do we shut for winter?
2) No mobile signal!
3) We rip off tourists! £22 to get into the Loch Ness experience for 20 min "entertainment"!!! £20 for Urquart castle a ruin!!!
4) Not a Greggs for miles!!!
Ok the last one was a wind up and I had a great time just like a moan!
What does everyone love or hate about our tourist places!
Oh I forgot to mention tourist tat shops!!! |

"Tourism is a devolved power. If its crap, it's Holyrood crap."
The country has fantastic views but totally spoiled by Westminster, we could have escaped the Westminster grip but sadly far too many without courage to say YES
this wont last long though, the YES vote is getting stronger day by day |

Lol!
I must have missed the SNP party political broadcast that promised;
1) open all year round
2) stop ripping off tourists
3) full mobile phone coverage
4) Greggs for everyone
5) Reduce tourist tat shops to the bare minimum!
I might have voted yes then! Lol |

Lol! Totally agree there was no mention of it in the post!
Although I might stand at the next election under the campaign slogan!
"Greggs for everyone"!!!
Everyone deserves a fresh sausage roll and yumyum! |

That is indeed the heading of the thread, and he explained why he had the 'but'.
The actual question he's asking is about tourism, not about politics.
If you want to discuss politics, open a thread and discuss it to your heart's content. Don't hijack posts and turn them into a political statement. You sound ridiculous. |

On a serious not though it is frustrating that so many places apart from the shite close for winter. Eilean Donan castle used to close until last year. It killed Skye's tourism as its one of those must do things on the way there. It's the knock on effect of some places not opening too.
Urquart is a rip off for sure. It's only £20 if you do the cruise with Jacobite. Cheaper on its own - but if you're taking a family it's costly. There are cooler castles for free. One wee hidden gem in Finlarig, at Killin. Old Campbell pad. Kilchurn is cool too and free.
Phone signal is a nightmare. O2 has next to no coverage North of Stirling with exception of Ft William and Inverness. Vodaphone is best coverage but still poor.
Other side of the coin is; it's Scotland. The North is rural. It's what you get. Enjoy it while the roads are quiet and you get the place to yourself! |

At what point did I say I was gods gift?! All I said was that you should not hijack someone's post to complain about the referendum. It's rude.
ANYWAY... back to tourism. As a child my parents would take us to Aviemore and other places, but I haven't really explored my country as an adult. I really should. I have friends in Nairn and what I've seen of that part is gorgeous |

There's no doubt about it...our scenery is second to none along with our people's warm and hospitable natures. But I can't help thinking we could improve our service from the tourists point of view.

To be fair it was all tongue in cheek 'til Onny arrived. He just can't help himself - and then it's just plain ride not to oblige.
But, back to tourism. Was out for a ride today with an old work colleague and we toured along East Lotian Coast then up to the Lammermuir hills.
Such an untapped resource there for tourists and full of great history, castles, monasterys , lochs, birth place of John Muir and even the Glenkinchie! Grew up there and it's still one of my fav parts of the country.
The industry is pre programmed to have people arrive in edinburgh or glasgow then head north when there's so much on offer across the central belt and below. |

Semi-serious response to the points made
1) Large parts of the Lake District, Cornwall, west Wales shut down this time of year so it's not uncommon. You can still look at the b_nny hills and lochs and stuff. Just take a picnic
2) You'd not hear it ringing over the sound your tractor makes (also goes for vibrations) Plus sheep & deer don't use mobiles
3)They're paying it, otherwise they wouldn't be charging it.
4) Hooray!
I love the tourist tat shops. Specifically - looking at the crap sold, wondering who would buy such a cheap-shit tawdry trinket, looking at the till and realising "oh. Them" |

A lot of it, like alongside Loch Lubnaig near Callander used to be, is left from wild campers. Not the camping as a hobby campers, but the campers from inner city and slab of pro lager and bottles of Buckie campers.
That's one of the reasons theres a new centre at Lubnaig. To stop it. They're looking at clamping down on Loch Lomond park too. It is a disgrace. Skye getting that way in bits too, just north of Broadford. |

Didn't realise the prices of urquhart castle and loch ness experience. It really is a shocking price.
Done driving for a small golf tour for Americans and they spent £400 on golf stuff (at carnoustie) like polo shirts and caps etc
£75 was like the cheapest polo shirt. |

Some absolutely amazing places in Scotland. Try visiting Easdale and Easdale Island on the west coast. Part of the slate islands with fantastic slate quarries. Beautiful picture village and brilliant little museum. Then there's (what I think) is the best view in Scotland from the top of the Cairn 'o Mount on the Fettercairn to Banchory road. Lovely road, with a great wee restaurant at Clatterin' Brig. It's close to me, and still my favourite road. |

You need to visit Stirling, take a walk through the castle and allow plenty time, it will fill you with proudness. and in the summer once you have been round the castle, take a walk through the graveyard, some amazing head stones, Wallace monument also amazing and fills you with pride,
Edinburgh castle is a must see, again plenty time needed.
The History of Scotland is all around us, take it all in, its simply amazing as is the proudness of many Scots.
Venture up to Dunkeld at the end of each October for the Amber festival, this first started in 2005 and continues every year The festival is held in a range of distinctive venues including Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Blair Castle, Dunkeld Cathedral, The Crannog, Castle Menzies, and The Baronial Hall
Dougie MacLean puts a huge amount of effort into this and speads it through his local community, well worth a visit.

The Falls of Bruar, near Blair Atholl
(Park at House of Bruar and the walk is behind this)
A beautiful short but surprisingly strenuous walk with good views of the gorge and falls from two stone bridges and a picnic area, there are clear paths on a hilly route with some steep sections and sheer drops at the gorge edge
but lovely views and crystal clear water

More Scots should get out and about and savour our wonderful natural gift.
Dont worry about tourist tat shops. Thats for tourists!!.
Take a wee picnic, some special treats a few( i shouidnt but i will treats)
Sit and enjoy a lovely spot, taking in the sights and sounds and smells of nature that abounds in the wonderful scenery. No sight or sound or smell of westminster or holyrood. Just Bonnie scotland and being Scottish with the privilage of having all this on our doorstep.
As for free speach! Sometimes better managed with a big stick. As with all things, free. Some take the piss!
Merely an observation( no political or religeous connotations) |

Lack of a Greggs is no joke my man! Just think of those poor highlanders who don't have the option of a Steak bake or a cheese and onion pasty for lunch!
Driving through Glencoe I couldn't help thinking to myself, the only thing that could make this place better is a blue and white Greggs sign! |

If you get annual membership with Historic Scotland, you can get 2 adults and up to 8 kids into their attractions as many times as you like for around £80 a year
I'm sure Scottish Heritage would be about the same price too so it makes these places well worth the visit.
We have fantastic scenery BUT........despite its bad points Scotland is still a much nicer office when you drive for a living than London |

442 Breeding pairs of GOLDEN EAGLES in Scotland at the last count, this is simply amazing
A new count is just beginning and that is a true inspiration to Scotland.
All of the golden eagles in the UK are found in Scotland, mainly in the Highlands and Islands, except for a solitary male in the Lake District

I work in wildlife conservation in the highlands, means I get to places most people don't. Some fantastic places, awe inspiring. You just got to get out there and find them. Although I am from down the road I find the country beautiful, with some fantastic people...I say some as I have also had my share of grief based on where I am from...that said I wouldn't go back. Who needs holidays abroad when its on your doorstep. |
