"SHOPPERS in Scotland must pay for carrier bags from today as a minimum charge for every bag given out is introduced.
It will cost at least 5p for each single-use bag as the levy covers all retailers including supermarkets, high street stores, corner shops and takeaways.
The charge applies regardless of whether the bags are paper, plastic or made from a biodegradable material.
MSPs overwhelmingly backed the move in a vote at Holyrood earlier this year."

I always take reusable bags to the supermarket but don't for clothes shopping so I'm going to have to get a nice new bag to carry around and put my things in  |

A childhood memory of mine is the huge pile of empty boxes for customers to use in the corner of the co-op in Albert street in Dundee. Used to rummaging through it for a suitable box. This was in the 70s mind so we did need simple things to amuse us. Every store should have 1 o these piles tho |

Can understand this law applying to supermarkets to encourgae people to take their own bags but it's a bit ridiculous that it also applies to smaller shops. I bought a couple of things from Greggs yesterday and the shop assistant told me that they were having to charge for the small bags they provide as well. You're hardly likely to take a bag for life along when you pop into a shop to buy something for lunch.
I think the law may be different in England when it comes in. |

There are a few things where bags are free need to read small print , if you just buy fries in mcd's for example no charge as fries are not in a closed box so think paper bag for sausage roll or cake would be the same . Charge would come in if then put in another bag . |

May juat be the sales staff being confused the scheme (as its not a tax) is to try and cut down on the amount of plastic bags but with shop owners scared of the possible fines may take a while to settle in |

Its been enforced here for a week or so already, in some shops anyways. I dont care or notice it much. Will try and remember to take bags with me but no big deal if I dont |

It was one of their small plastic bags, not the paper ones, just about big enough to fit a pack of sandwiches and a can of juice. |

alot of folk seem to think this is a govt scheme to get more money from you for the first time I find myself agreeing with politicians they are making nothing from this (will probably cost them money to hire folk to prove any shops breaking the rule and then fineing) I do see this as an attempt to cut down on a product that is harmful to the enviroment and in time the benefits will be good |

It's not a big deal for us, when we lived in southern Ireland we had to pay for shopping bags, you get used to taking your own, and if you forget then tuff titty! |

Here in Wales it's been in for a few years. Takes a while to remember bags while shopping. But sinks in, in the end.
And if I need to buy another bag, its no big deal.
But if you use the drive through at McDonald's, you do need a bag as food would be everywhere!!!! |

Observing folk down the toon - shopping habits are beginning to change. Enough of those 5ps add up over a year.
Ahhh for the days when they used to take your milk bottles away, when the milk was delivered by a milk man in an environmentally friendly milk float from a local dairy and they used to give you 10p when you handed in your bottles of Ginger...

it's not shop lifting though it just tax if things keep goin like this we'll need to pay tax on oxygen

where are you getting its a tax its not a tax the shop owner buys the bags its now illegal to give away free and must be charged at a min of 5p so when you just take you are shop lifting from the shop owners

Always done it with food shopping but having to take a bag for a takeaway is a bit full on. Friend got a McDonald's today, they stuck the fries in one bag then handed the burger over in a plastic tray which she just stuck in the bag anyway, all a bit silly if you ask me. |

If we could be SURE the shops are giving the money to good causes, that'd be better.
If it were LOCAL good causes, even more so. The choice of a local good cause, like Yorkhill Sick Kids, would probably make me change my shopping habits.

Regardless if what the charge is - it is hardly the staff in the shops fault it has to be charged. No need for name calling they are only doing their jobs!

fair enough, but a shoul mention a know the guy who a called prick so it's not as bad as a made it sound we were laughin bout it so everyone can calm down & stop sending me hate mail coz at the end of the day life is too short & this isn't exactly the right site for this talk anyway |

The cost of the bags has been hidden in the price of your shopping for years + people are carrying around an advert for the shop. Now the shops are getting at least 5p per customer, will groceries go down in price?

The real point is to try and reduce all the rubbish lying around our beautiful country. It's been in place in Ireland and Wales for some time and does seem to be making an impact on the amounts of litter. |

_nny you start calling it a tax then you want it as a charity scheme the shops bore the cost before in order to keep our custom not advertising most local shops couldnt afford that expense it was plain blue plastic bags the whole point of the 5p aint to make anyone rich its to try and change our habits of always taking more and more things thats bad for the enviroment most of the leading supermarkets were giving away "bags for life" all last week what is the big problem with thinking about the future |

Yes it will and it's a great idea. We're too used to just taking loads if them and using them willy nilly.
What happened to the days when supermarkets gave you boxes to stick your groceries in? That was so much better than half a doz bags; stronger and easier to carry. |
