I lived in Devon for a number of years and visits home were brilliant, going back I always got loads of Clydesdale bank notes just to see the faces.
Never had them refused but had plenty of funny looks |

The best way to do this folks, is order a round of drinks at a bar. Make sure you deliver the drinks to your table of pals as the bar staff/landlord/owner are still pouring the rest, leave yours till last, await the "that'll be £18.20 (or whatever) please", take a good hearty sip out of your chosen drink, and pull a Scottish £20 note from your purse/wallet and smile politely.
You'll hqve to answer the inevitable question, "Have you not got anything else", and at this point, you should say no, then always remind the person serving you that you can always go and round up what remains of the drinks back if they're not happy.
Works every time. |

If you think a Scottish note is bad, you should try handing over a Northern Irish bank note, you'd think you had just fucked their mother in front of them by the looks on their faces |
