ok Libster - the Mod scene was kind of born out of teen counterculture in the mid 60s and was quite fashion led and included loads of bands you still hear on the radio. most famously are the ones listed earlier, the Who and the Jam marked the highlights of 2 seperate era's. The ska and 2 tone movements came as a splinter of this scene incorporating Reggae beats and MC-ing with huge echo effects like the Jamaican Selector style. look up the Specials, Madness and Early Eddie Grant tunes for popular songs.
The Punk movement came in the early 70's and had hotspots in New York and London before spreading through the western world, popularised by the Sex Pistols and The Ramones, then UK Subs and Edinburghs own Exploited. Musicianship always came second to image, often Anarchist or right wing based iconography. Songs were short and sometimes poppy or really brutal. I've seen loads of punk bands over the years.
As a veteran of well over 100 gigs (maybe 200 overall) my info is fairly gerneralised but will give you a start
