Any shop is friendly. You won't be laughed at or chased out of the store. Because if you did there'd be a shitstorm.
At the end of the day they want to make a sale, and they really don't care who to. I agreesome of the staff may not know how to deal with you, and it may be a toss up as to who is more nervous. And if you're shopping while dressed and want to try something on, don't let them give you any bollocks about not being allowed in the ladies changing rooms.
If you're worried about running into someone you know that's a different problem. If you're shopping locally that's always a risk.
Edinburgh or Glasgow are great and easy to lose yourself in the crowd.
