Because a proportion of the sound your ear hears, comes from vibrations sent through the skull and jaw. This mixes with what is heard through the air. Its the reason many people say they hate the sound of their voice when they hear it played back.
In the same vein, people who say the hate the way they look in photographs is because they see an inverted image. Since everyone is used to seeing the left side of their face reflected on the left side of the mirror, when they see a photo, the left and right sides are transposed.
