thought it was great. Filled the vacuum that was missing from our lives after the end of pineapple dance studio's. The wee ned climbing out the window was the best bit, apart from the happy as larry junkie setting up house with his just parolled gf. bliss, ten minutes later had butted his now pregnant girlfriend in the stomach. But it's ok as "he didnae mean it but" we wait with baited breath for the outcome

Yes but give her time, living in that house, she does not have a very good role model.......................

Sad indictment of society today, makes me thankful for what I have, although I have worked hard for it. I was lucky to have a good start in life although probably a bit sheltered. Making up for it now lol

I think that every housing scheme has individuals like the ones featured in the program so it's not fair to say that everyone in Kilmarnock is like the ones shown on the program, there are ones around my area who you could say are the Marvin's etc.I grew up in a housing scheme and thankfully never went off the rails,in fact i would say it made me the person i am today-yes a raging pervert

my heart breaks for that wee 5 year old lassie, should be full of innocence n fun at that age, her mum puts herself across as a good samaratin by taking in vulnerable and in need teenagers but all shes done is bring all their troubles to her house and expose that poor wee girl to them to the extent she is gonna believe thats all she can expect from life and it is fucking far from it. her priority in the morning was getting a lighter to light a fag in bed rather than get her kids breakfast and ready for school. bloody shame for that lassie and the hundreds out there like her

Not too sure what the message behind the programme is or will be once it ends, doubt there will be any "all lived happily ever after" anyway.

A few things the programme-makers don't say.

The woman taking in the young girls? She only did it because the Social pays "carers" £250 a week to do so. Notice how she squeezed them into the tiniest rooms, even the attic? Also her big change of heart about these girls being a bad influence? This miraculously came about after her conviction for assault. The fact is you can't be a carer if you have unspent convictions. She kicked those girls out the moment she stopped getting money for them.

The BBC are trying to portray these people in the most sympathetic way, but glossing over the fact that the Cunningham clan are reputed to be the biggest thieves in Kilmarnock.

Reply privately, Reply in forum +quote or View forums list

By (user no longer on site)  over a year ago

actually she didnt get anythin for takin them in, as she is unsuitable for a care role because of past convictions etc and shockingly enough people are investigated before social services place people to live with them and the fact there is not enough space in the house....

allegedly is a great word....as is glossing over... do you actually know how common the name cunningham is???

having moved from tyneside, a few yrs ago, i am not phased at all by the goings on, that was depicted in The Scheme, having lived among people like them, people who are work-shy, and all they wanna do is get off their faces, and claim benefits, and they think life owes them a living, i was taught you get nowt for nowt, in this life- i want something better for myself so thats why education is the way forward for me. The likes of those featured in that tv series, are a disgrace to law abiding decent honest folk in killie, and as for ghettoising, im all for that, let them keep the lawless with each other, and let the honest, law-abiding folk live in peace and tranquility,

me too Mrs AA, I was flabbergasted when the mum lying in bed with very young daughter... yelled upstairs to another duaghter... 'some C*** has my lighter' or words to that effect.

a generation without role models parenting another generation and not being role models and the cycle

continues..

good on the young girl who dances and to be fair that was a positive for her parents..

"Comedy?!..... it's more like horror!

i agree... sat open mouthed at the first half and gave up...i know its a 'tv' social experiment type of thing, but how people could show themselves like that to the nation is beyond me! i suppose they think everyone's like that"

Isn't it the same misplaced desire for celebrity that gets people to go on Jeremy Kyle?

Likewise, i recorded it and watched it yesterday for the first time ... OMG!!!! Those poor children will grow up exactly the same as the parents. The part that interested me was they are walking about with i-phones, have hugeee plasma screen televisions and none of them work, utter disgrace. The worst part was some woman shouting "some **** has taken my lighter" whilst the kids were lying on the bed ... needless to say this is the first and last time i will tune in x

Pat Kane called it poverty porn in a inter_iew when it first aired.

Charles Dickens changed the _iew on poverty by his writings.

There but for the grace of God, go I

Will be interesting to see how the area changes after the series finishes.

agree 'there for the grace and all that'... for me it is not about poverty, it about role modelling for your child and encouraging them to achieve. The young girl dancing was hope.. she may make something for herself out of that.

It was the woman, taking waifs and strays into her home, admirable if she then displayed the behaviours to inspire.. but yelling 'some C***' has taken my lighter infront of a 7/8 year old... answering the phone to the educational authority about her other child being absent from school: she was in bed with her boyfriend and never went to sit the exam.., the mother never even got out of her bed.

She also mentioned she had been sacked from her workplace and kinda grinned.. 2 million unemployed, jobs not easy to find, mouths to feed... and she kinda grinned

Poverty!! that would describle people that live without money, scrimp and scrape to feed & house themselves ... what I saw wasnt poverty, those people had money, albeit they chose to spend it on drink/drugs/cigs and the such. They all had expensive phones, £700+ televisions, playstations etc etc ... that isnt poverty x (IN MY OPINION)!!

It's poverty, but not as we know it (to paraphrase from Star Trek).

It's a poverty of aspiration, brought about by witnessing a couple of generations being cast aside. This particular scheme isn't unique in that - it exists up and down the whole of the UK.
