No I don't think they did..........
Its one of thee no win situations for them Damned because they did close it, would have been damned if they hadn't and a plane went down.
Also it has given us something more interesting on the news to hear of all the folks "Nae planes, trains and automobiles" stories than the waffle of MP's false election promises. |

I'm not so certain that it was the airlines that reacted. More a case of the authorities and European Union that suggested the flight restrictions I think.
But as for the 'over reaction' as I understand it, Frito Magmatic Eruptions are very rare and this is why the problem has arisen with this abrasive ash.
The nature of the eruption means that there is a whole heap more silica in the dust. When this gets sucked into the engines it melts and forms a fine layer of glass which CAN gum up the works.
Personally, I would rather the planes stayed on the ground until the full extent of the problem was determined.

I dont think that they over reacted as its all 2 easy to say aye its safe to fly then when a plane drops out the sky say oh we made a mistake. better safe than sorry. besides the transatlantic route is over my hoose. and the flight path for glasgow and boy was it quiet when they were banned.

well flying from edinburgh to gatwick and then onto larnaca on thursday, both pilots actually came out of the cockpits before taking off to assure everyone, there was nothing to be worried about, personally i would have preferred to have left last friday when it was suppose to leave , after all, i was flying sounth then east, way way way in front and flying away from the dust, but anyway have landed safely now the dust has settled lol |

working in the travel industry which doesn't deal with the air (european trains and ferries) I don't think they over reacted at all....
there is a old pilots saying....
"better to be on the ground wishing you were up in the air..... that to be up in the air wishing you were on the ground!"....
if there had been problems with even one commerical flight there would have been hell to pay...
