I had my first proper experience with SM while attending CJ's last night. I wasn't keen on it before I tried it and after last night nothing has changed What it was, was that one of the women at the party was a dominatrix and was showing off her SM equipment. Same sketch for me too. I tried this at cjs a while back. All it did for me was confirmed I have a decent pain threshold and that I can take it. I know a few were entertained by what was going

From how you described your experience it was more a display/show with very little, if any sexual enjoyment/involvement.
For some a more intimate surrounding and sexual atmosphere is needed to enjoy various forms of SM play.

The appeal of SM like any sexual activity is very personal thing. But to generalise, it is often about an exchange of control. Giving and taking that trust and power can be a powerful turn on. For it to work at its best communication and understanding of each other's needs and desires is essential. Often there is a complicated relationship between the partners.
