Erm what does amp mean?

I know, I know, at my time of life and experience I should know better but afraid am stumped on this.

What the hell does amp mean? I keep seeing it on profiles and messages but the only thing I know about amp is the electricity bit from o level physics 1974!!

Explanations appreciated.

It's a glich with the system. When you use a & it's replaced by amp seen it on a few profiles and profile updates.

amp is short for ampersand

used for the '&' as explained)
