My mother always insisted on the windows being clean before the new year.... getting rid of the auld year's dirt to see in the new one... lol
Unfortunately it seems this was common elsewhere and I am still lumbered with the chore!!
Anyone else got traditions or things they are superstitious about that have to be done before the bells? |

My dad being over 6' always went outside just before the bells with a 1/4 bottle in his pocket. He would knock at the last chime of the bells so that the first foot would be tall and dark. |

Ginger wine cocktail sticks and crisps always at the bells when I was younger . Shortbread and cherry bun for new years day after homemade soup , steak pie homemade peas and mashed and boiled potatoes ... First person at the door had to have something to first fit and dad always opened the back door as the bells rang to let out the old. I always had a wee tear in my eye saying happy new year to everyone .. (soft sensitive type I am)

Clean faces and clean sheets. Empty bins and new roller blind in the kitchen.
Open the window to hear the horns from the ships on the Clyde. Ships meant work for the men in the shipyards.
It's a quiet river now. |

The back and front doors thing used to go on in my mother's house as did a first footer with a half bottle and a lump of coal!
Not so now. There is certain psycological thing about clearing out the old to make way for the new year I think... |
