We're all getting more selfish..
I've had my fair share of dirty looks, or just simply being ignored when holding doors for folks, and the number just let go in my face without them checking to see if someone is there...

Hmm not sure about the UK been so long since we lived there.
But over here it is frowned upon for the man to hold the door open for the lady instead he would go though check for any danger then let the lady follow on through.

My father told me manners cost nothing !!! It is not just the young that are short on good manners I have found many mature people sadly lacking in the social skills as well !! |

So that her gown didn't get splashed as a carriage went by...these Victorian values Hector....must be great to be able to remember that far back......  |

I remember once being on a bus , going to work and it was packed. A pregnant woman got on and no body and I mean no body got up and offered her their seat , so I did and said quite loudly "don't worry you can I have my seat, I'll be kind" most of the people where either on phones or listening to music or just ignorant. I mean really has manners completely been wiped off the face of the earth.  |

Some of us a very odd indeed but it's impossible NOT to do the opening doors and standing up to let a lady or an older person sit thing.
It's fixed in our brain. We can't 'unlearn' it. For most of us of a certain age it came about from years of going out as a family and watching, maybe subconsciously, what our fathers and grandfathers did.
It's as firmly fixed as the two times table and the words of Twinkle twinkle little star. |

I remember my grandfather telling me that it was proper to walk down the stairs on a tram in front of a lady so that if there was a jolt, she wouldn't fall all the way down the stairs.
On the way up the stairs, you walked behind her, hoping for a flash of stocking top. It was the 60s after all |
