Back from the vets.
Our dog had another epileptic fit this morning I and witnessed it for the first time from beginning to end. Such a horrible and scary sight and very worrying.
Been to the vets and we have been told that if he has another fit this month then he has to go on medication.
I honestly thought that he was going to die this morning.
I'm just thankful that we have a wonderful vet and that we have pet insurance.

"Hope all is back to near normal in your house and it's a long time before anything happens again . "
Thanks steph, this has been the fifth one this year since Feb. So here's hoping.
The vet said only if it's more than once in the same month. Then he needs to go on medication. |

One of my old pet dogs was epileptic and he lived to the age of 17 before passing of natural causes. You just adjust and learn to manage.
I wouldnt allow anyone to do anything else, pointing out ghat my mum has epilepsy and whatever way we treated the dog we would have to do the same with her |

Think this is it for the long haul, what age was yours when they started fitting?
(Your dog and not your mum by the way) |

My old lab had his first fit at around a year old. One of the most frightening and distressing things i ever witnessed. Medication turned out to make things worse so we took him off it and got used to the fits. He had a long and happy life leaving us finally to chase celestial rabbits at the age of 17.....still a big dopey pup to the end.
Good luck Charlie...fingers crossed..,. |

Awww sorry to hear all this. Fits can be very scarey to witness for the first time but remember, the dog knows nothing about it, it very unlikely to die and that when it comes round, it may bite so be careful.
Labs can have a genetic inherited epilepsy, which is probably why most of these dogs are the same breed. There will be a common ancestor/s that passed on the gene so would be worth telling breeders and suggesting they seek advice or do some research into siblings before breeding again. |

Sending you a hug. You do feel so helpless when a much loved pet takes unwell. I've been lucky with my cat (he's 22). He's had dental work done and he did have a major op to remove his spleen. Initially that was diagnosed as bowel cancer and it wasn't til the vet opened him it was diagnosed otherwise. He still bounces about like a 2 year old. But my other cat (who was 16) had to get out to sleep as he developed lymphoma. Broke my heart as I couldn't save him.
Pets are always there for you. Your best friends who never judge, give you a cuddle when you need it, and let you cry all over them without complaining. I'd be devastated the day my old boy passes. |
