On the radio this morning , apparently the pilots both fell asleep whilst flying but the auto pilot was on.

They didn't disclose which air line but makes me feel really safe knowing that they just want to get a bit of shuteye.

Worse things happen but we don't here of them . Drivers on road drive tired from cars , buses and trucks who hasn't seen one weave across lane a bit then pull straight again

Just as well they created a ficticious airline name for the film, Flight with Denzel Washington starring in it.

These big planes only need a pilot to take off and land the cockpits are all run on auto pilot during flights anyway.

Everything is computerised, soon air traffic control will have a whizz kid sitting at a simulator flying the thin from the airport.

A kid will take off from here and as soon as he leaves our air space someone else will pick it up and then someone will land the plane at its destination.

Just think no more having to shell out £50,000 + for a commercial pilot's licence

God i hope not. Can you imagine, boarding the plane and instead of the voice of the captain or sfo, you get a sat-nav esque voice telling you you flight time and weather etc,,lol

Usually they take turns to sleep on long haul flights.

But the technology exists for pilotless planes - but it won't happen as the public wouldn't accept it

these planes dont actually need pilots to take off ir land mearly a pilot to ok its landing and taking of computations if the tv programmes are to be believed as for the pilots only reporting this now they didnt they reported it straight away upon landing in the logs reason ............... the company didnt have enough pilots to cover flights and if they flew for an american company the would have been grounded due to the amount of flying hours they had done not to make light of the situation but its the company at fault not the pilots

Pilots are like drivers - under immense pressure to get the most done in the shortest time for the least amount of money. It can always be traced back to the company

Should all pilots have a screaming child in the cockpit to prevent sleeping? Works for the passengers.

Yes and no, certain things are done in the name of safety compared to driving. Over-familiarisation avoidance, this is flight/pilot planning, to not give pilots the same routine/routes in order to avoid them becoming both bored and tired of routine, they are given changes in routes etc.

Driving tends to become a familiar set of routes and routines.

You are right. I much prefer doing different runs each day, it gets boring doing the same thing. Variety is the spice of life and as you say, if you do the same drive every day you will get complacent. That's why more accidents happen within 5 miles of a persons home - they feel they know the road and take more risks.

The same must be the same with pilots. If they could alter routes and the type of aircraft they are flying it must be better as it makes it more varied
