Mrs Saint has only gone and got our laptop infested with viruses/trojans/spyware/whatever the hell they are (as you can see I'm no techy and it might have been my fault but where would I be if I took the blame all the time? ) .
The lappy keeps crashing every time we try to remove them.
We seem to have the spyware.IE monster and Lsas.Blaster.keyloger???!!!
I've googled them and we've tried to follow instructions on removing them but to no avail. The screen just keeps going blue.
Any techies out there who can advise us?
I'me sure Mrs S would be very grateful.....  |

Not techy either Saint's But if you can get online search for and download AVG anti virus...it's free and very good!
Don't know if that will be any help...but my 2p's worth. |

for good protection i regularly run all these free programs, assuming you already have an av-firewall installed. i seeked advice from a spyware specialist website and these were the programs advised to get, there is no one program does all, install em all, update them and run the scans, do this every so often.
ad-aware
ccleaner
malwarebytes anti malware
spybot
spywareblaster

I'm not a techie, but i'd still be tempted to do a system restore to get back to a good configuration.
Once you have this done you should then install all the virus blockers/anti~spyware progs that have been recommended.
Hope you get it sorted. |

A while ago I managed to infect the family PC and trust me its not fun having to explain to everyone that I have no idea whats wrong or how I did it 
Hubby rolled it back to factory settings - but we had already backed almost everything up so didnt lose much, just a few pics and an album or 2 of music. Once back to factory settings you will again get the free trial of whatever anti virus was there at the start. While running that like has been said get AVG and another one or 2.
We run about 4 on the family PC and and extra one on my lappy cos I use wireless and am paranoid about being hacked

borrow a pals laptop or pc
Download malwarebytes
Stick it on a usb memory stick
Open you pc is 'safe' mode
Install malware bytes
Run it
Do the same with avg
Reboot pc , should be sorted |

Had the same prob one time. Computer expert told me i had the 'Dreaded Blue Screen' and it's fooked. Wish i got a second opinion but i bought a new comp of him next day. Don't know if he just scammed me or not. |

I recently found a back door jhacker in my home PC which dropped 2 generic trojans.
I ended up formatting my hard drive and starting from scratch.
Not all problems are that harsh but a re-format is sometimes the only answer.
Back all your personal files onto an external drive and then format the PC.
Re-boot Windows and start from scratch. May take a day or two for all your settings and updates to kick in but well worth it in the end.
PS its also FREE no need to involve PC engineers who like to have a wee nosey at your contents see if the ycan find some porn on there. |

Then make sure you have a good anti virus programme on there.
I personally use the AVG FREE download.
Problem with having 3 or 4 on your machine is the yend up corrupting each other and thats when viruses/trojans.worms etc get through.

Pretty is the best at doing stuff like this...infecting the laptop i mean 
This month iv had to reset it from a backup which is a pain. i use Kaspersky which seems to block most but with the dirty sites she goes on.....ccleaner is ace for the registry and ad-aware is good for the crap. Dont really recommend spybot but others do.

as said there is no one proggy does all you need to run various programs to help catch all the buggers.
i checked Eves laptop yesterday and each program i run found different trojans or spyware the other programs did not catch.
i love eset internet security, free from the right places lol  |

must be summat doin the rounds my pal phoned me the day sayin hers infected with a worm she was blaming farmville but god only knows where it came from!! she tried runnin avg but couldnt shift it xx |

had to fix a freinds pc with the same problem tried everything to remove them the easiest thing was to reinstall windows after putting all his photo's etc on a disk in his favour put windows7 on for him, so pc is running a lot faster now. often quicker doing that than trying to romove the bad stuff |

Personally I liked easyshare's advice the best
will need to speak to dafty and she what she thinks then we may well get back to some of you for more help.

There are progs that will "do the lot", but you have to pay for them (norton, McAfee and the like), most folk use a combination of firewall, anti-virus, and anti-spyware/malware which are used individually and are free (prevous posters have listed most of them already). Depending on how badly the system is infected, will determine whether you'll be able to install and run anti-virus/malware software. The "blue screen of death" is a sign that vital system files are either missing or corrupted, and my best advice would be to restore the system back to the factory settings. When I say restore, I don't mean using the system restore function within windows as it will fail using that function (the malware will have attacked that already and rendered it useless).

i repeat there are no programs that do all, i have eset internet security, regarded highly a lot more than norton or mcafee lol (bloatwares), and all these free spyware malware programs still pic up nasties, if the AV/firewall programs are so good why do they not pic up all nasties? |

install a mproggy called hijack this, it gives a log of stuff on your pc, post the log on the forum and someone will analyse it for free, tell you what bugs you have and tell you how to get rid of it. Its not that complcated. |

All anti-virus/malware removal programs are definiction dependent, and without the correct definiction updated to the program, all will fail to report the infection. The quicker a definiction can be written for a nastie, and be made available to the end user, the more effective the program will be. All the players have dropped the ball (including eset) when it comes to making updates quickly available. And all it takes is one bad report and they're branded useless. It's all down to preference, and what works for you.
The bloatware makes things a little easier for the less experienced, all be it a bit more clunky and resource greedy.
I agree, Hijackthis will let them know what they're dealing with. |
