Tastes somewhere between Jagermeister and Port. If you're not a fan of either then you probably won't like it. Imho due to the caffeine and sugar content it acts as more of a stimulant than a depressant - like tequila. Saying that though it completely depends on the person. Since the 'majority' of people that drink it are neds, it can often be attributed with traits of anger and aggression (not implying these are traits of neds).

Like I said the effects depend on the person. Combine any strong alcohol with high quantities of caffeine and sugar and you'll probably get the same effect.

Not the kind of drink for having a nice quiet night in by the fire. More for when you want to go out and "get mad with it". Just my opinion.

"I just wonder if most folk were served a glass of well chilled Buckie, would they be able to tell what it is?"

Probably not but then again most normal people haven't tasted a poor fortified wine with added caffeine. I'd be very surprised if it came close to a good Shiraz and as for chilling it, you wouldn't need to do that if it was a good robust red would you, or are you saying its a bit of a girly Beaujolais nouveau?

"

I quote Tim Atkin

"The temperature of the wine in your glass can have a marked impact on the way it smells and tastes. If you don't believe me, try the same wine first at 15C and then at 22C. The fruit and the perfume will be more pronounced in the former, while in the latter, the alcohol will leap out of the glass and the flavours will seem jammy and indistinct.

That's why I give most reds 20 minutes in the fridge at home before I open them, and some considerably more than that. How cool can you go? Especially if they are unoaked, 14C is no problem for lighter-bodied red grapes such as Pinot Noir, Gamay, Corvina, Tempranillo and Cabernet Franc."

BUCKFAST POEM

Kids are laughing, drinking, flailing

Singing songs that sound like wailing.

Bottles full of deep dark wine

Their spirits high,

I’ll stick to mine.

Monastic clerics fortified this brew

In England’s south, they did construe

To make a wine, the world’s best

The Brothers grim

At their behest.

This vintage sold the world over

It’s been d*unk by king as well as drover.

A dreaded thought runs through the head

Two pints of this

And you’ll be dead.

A potent alcoholic potion

A hefty drink if you’ve the notion.

Now it’s d*unk by teens thought plucky

Their cheapest hit,

They call it Buckie

Personally i've always thought the stuff tastes vile, but each to their own. We sell it in my work, but only by the shot/bomb and not glass or bottle like we do red and white wine-it's one of our most popular, which sursised me lol.

Reply privately, Reply in forum +quote or View forums list

By (user no longer on site)  over a year ago

Do not like the taste of the stuff.

Then again I have been tee total for a fair number if years a now

Nose bleeding into hankies outside pub!!!!!!!!!! As a retired bouncer this tends to be a trend more in line with a mixture of Blue WKD and a few snorts of the white powder. Man that stuff does evil things to the nostrils.

Seriously majority of fights in pubs and clubs are not necessary Buckfast related particularly as majority don't sell it inside their premises

ANY ALCOHOLIC beverage brings out the animal in majority of people. Mix it with the wrong look, someone staring at you in the pub or saying the wrong thing and POW we have a bitch fight.

Lets face it with alcohol in your system you may have Dutch courage and ready to battle with anyone but your timing, your aim etc is so askew its is simply hand bags at dawn and a bad bitch fight .

Nah Buckfast is vile but not a major contributor to mainline violence in pubs maybe on homes or in the street, which I would also contest, majority of fights I have witnessed are caused through pill popping or snorting the white stuff and not necessary good quality Coke
