I've been around horses all my life and mine have always been out at night unless they are ill. I've mostly had hardy breeds but even the less so can be out in the summer months, and winter too with a rug on. If they look fit and well there shouldn't be a problem in my opinion.

I own Several, compete at a high level and have owned horses all my life so hopefully my answer should tell you all you need to know.

In General, Yes Most horses can live out during the night in the Summer

All our British Native Breeds are bred and built to live out 24/7 all year round without any issues. They are bred to cope with all the elements snow, rain, mud, severe cold tempretures but of course the ground you put them on must have

-Running Water

-Be Well Drained

-Ample Shelter

-Enough forage and grazing

-Well Fenced and Safe

Depending on Age and Condition some need rugged during the winter months, plenty shelter and a good hard feed and if older they require a rug for extra protection and heat.

You generally find Finer Horses will need to be stabled during the Oct-April this keeps their weight and condition stable. Also less leg/hoof problems too.

Also depending on their work load some come in at night to rest, manage their weight/food intake and to be rugged for better condition.

If you have any concerns for a Horse/ponies welfare contact the WorldHorseWelfare Society (WHW)which is a charity which will access the pony/horse in question. Or the SSPCA.

Your totally right wild horses don't come in at night but domestic Horses are a completely different type all together.

i look after a fair few horses (not only fems ride you know)and each horse is very diffrent all our horses come in for winter whether they are hardy breeds or not as they sociable animals (refraining from herd as they aint so docile lol)but some of them have to come in roll on spring fever

Cool Heather.

I breed and show Welshies (welsh Mountain Ponies, section As) the ones that are shown or will be shown during the show season come in, older or in foal come in too. However many if the bigger studs will leave them Au Natuarle on the Welsh hills as they simply can't and don't need to be stable.

As Kola said every horse is different

no they dont..

some horses stay out during the summer only, some stay out all year round,

some rugged some not... depends on the horse, the breed and how its been looked after.
