Would you leave a secure job that you have been in for 10 years?
I've been working for a local authority for 10 years and desperately want to leave and earn more else where. Only problem is that nowhere else is secure enough. Any thoughts ideas and recommendations would be appreciated x |

All good advice just dont sell yourself short or bully yourself into staying.people have a horrible habit of thinking "things wont change so best not to try" or believing that this is the best they can achieve so they should be thankful.always push yourself beyond what you believe are your limits and your surprise yourself.whatever you do dont be a person who uses the words "what if?" Or "if only" |

Unfortunately just been made redundant.
Loved where I worked and have been in the same job/industry for 25yrs.
Seriously considering going freelance, just not sure I can make that work.
Personally, if I had a secure job, think I'dput up with the shit, unless it was extreme. |

Trying to get another job is not easy these days. I know someone who was made redundant and after a year all he could get was working in a call centre. To say that it is worse than being at school in an understatement is putting it mildly. He is currently being disciplined for missing out saying the brand name from the script that he has to say.
Sometimes it is better the devil you know!!
Never go into this call centre after having a dodgy curry as the loo lights go out after 5 minutes. |

We both quit our old jobs, moved away from our home town and returned to education a few years ago, it was a massive risk, but was the best decision we ever made! Our life is 10 times better than it used to be (it wasn't that bad to begin with with).
Our advice is, do what makes you happy and don't be afraid to take risks. x |

The issue as I see it is you're struggling between security & wanting more money.
I don't know what job you currently do but are there no chances of promotion if you do well for your current (secure) employer?
What have you done over the last 10 years that would appeal to an employer to offer you more financial remuneration? Have you taken on extra training, courses, more duties & responsibilities or investigated other areas of employment (& what qualities & qualifications) you need to succeed in other fields?
Ask yourself, if YOU were a potential employer looking to offer someone a position then what would make you stand out from the other candidates?
Also consider if its the money or the job or you that's making you frustrated with your current employment. Then make a plan of action, set a goal & realistic timetable to change what is not working for you & really GO for it.
If you want anything in life you can get it if you work hard. It won't be handed to you on a plate. If you think it should be handed to you on a plate without you putting in any effort then stick with the security. If you plan, work at your goals & learn from successes (& failures) then you'll achieve more.
I'm now working for myself & loving it. However I've been used to jobs paying excessive amounts. It doesn't always make you happy having more money. So think about that too.
Good luck. |

Extremely fortunate to retire from job with excellent pension on the Thursday and started another job on the following Monday.
A little bit of trepardation after so long in the best job in the world, but Ive been very fortunate. I've been to some wonderful places within all of Scotland that I would never ever have visited.
Its a big bad world out there and unless your 100% confident on your decision process, I would be cautious before moving posts.
If you do, best of luck... |

similar situation here, just trying to get into the offshore sector after 12 years in the industrial/commercial sector, also had to pay a small fortune to upgrade my qualifications but the way I see it is nothing ventured nothing gained, the only person that has to believe its the wright thing to do is you.
good luck bud !! |
