Just listening to some Cover Versions which made me think...
What song have you liked equalky, as much or more in the cover version than its original form?
I'll kick off with Cello Song - Nick Drake
(I never thought ANYONE could cover Nick's originality & unique expressive songs)
Then Jose Gonzales did a cover
(I knew instantly that I recognised those opening bars, but I was really taken by his interortation)
Then I found a remix of Jose's version which just blew me out the water
(By Mighty Mouse Remixes on YouTube).
So what's your fave covers? If possible add a link to YouTube or the heading it's under so others can have a listen.

An obvious one, is Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah, and absolute classic.
Some of my other faves.. Rammstein doing Depeche Mode's Stripped
Hellsongs do a pile of great ones, but their 'Run To The Hills' and 'We're Not Gonna Take It' are great. |

We Found Love - Tyler Ward
He does a ton of covers but this accoustic, slow version of the Rihanna classic is a blissed out take on a song that usually has me dancing round the lounge in my underpants. Lol!

Common People - William Shatner (yes Cpt Kirk takes the Pulp song & beams it somewhere else entirely).
When You Walk In The Room - Agnetha Faltskog (ok I sneaked in an Abba reference).
Both Sides Now - Tina Arena (does Joni Mitchell proud).
Car Wash - Christina Aguilera & Missy Elliot (get your Friday night disco gear on).
The Whole Of The Moon - Mandi Moore (the girl from Tangled takes on The Waterboys).
The Impossible Dream - Luther Vandross (the man sings with strings).

Daddy Cool by Placebo
anything from the Sun Kil Moon album Tiny Cities. It's all covers of Modest Mouse songs. I dont really like the originals but youtube them to compare.
Going out on a limb here, but Midas Fall's cover of NIN's Hurt. I know everyone loves the Johnny Cash one but give my suggestion a try. Very accessible. |

I can't believe no-one has mentioned Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower. Bob Dylan has even changed the way he plays it to match what Jimi done with it!
Also, the Jose Gonzales song was a great shout! |

Cheers Flumpy, I do love the Jose version a ton tho I'm always gonna love Nick's original. I usually think anyone covering him is on a suicide mission but Jose knocked it out the park. |

I'm a bit obsessed with covers! If I like a song, I like to find as many different versions as I can.
Some of these ^ are great- loving the Frightened Rabbit one especially.
Heres some more-
Vampire Weekend- everywhere (fleetwood mac)
The kooks- all that she wants.
Coeur De Pirate -wicked games.(the weekend) she has a stunning voice! Usually sings in French.
Theres a girl on You Tube called Celia Pavey and she does a really nice version of Feel Good Inc by the Gorillaz.
And a wee guy on You Tube called Jordan Landers, he's got a brilliant voice, hes got the Susan Boyle factor i think, to look at him you don't expect a voice like that! I like him singing Hit the Road Jack.

Oh one to bliss out too that is sung by Chris Pratt in "The Five-Year Engagement" movie. It's an old song originally done by Lola Beltran & covered most famously by Harry Belafonte. His live 7 minute version is stunning & so emotive.
However try All Angels version on the album "Fly Away" for a totally blissed out trip.

If you like Bette you'll love her "Songbook" covers of Rosemary Clooney & Peggy Lee.
She takes on Clooney with her usual fun approach, but Lee with a bit more reverence & less joie de vivre. Good companions though. |

"House of the rising sun... nobody knows who wrote it.
The Animals made it famouse but iv never heard any original."
The closest I've found to an original/older recording is Josh White who does a grand job on this song.
I thought I'd add some other oldies/original/covers to this.
A Rockin' Good Way - The Spaniels; Brooke Benton & Dinah Washington; Shaking Stevens & Bonnie Tyler.
Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town - Johnny Darrel; Kenny Rogers

Frank Turner..... Fix Me
A cover of the black flag classic.....
Someday I'll feel no pain
Someday I won't have a brain
Take away the part that hurts let the rest remain
Fix me, fix my head
Fix me please I don't want to be dead...
If you have never heard of black flag you should really check them out, I went to to Cambodia on my gap year because of Henry Rollins lol.... |

"The Parkhead faithful singing ( just can't get enough ) by Depeche Mode "
As opposed to you singing "I Just Can't Get A Muff".
This thread is for real cover versions by real artists - not real arses! |

I've come across Lily Allen covering ELO's Mr Blue Sky which really suits her voice.
There's also her version of Keane's Somewhere Only We Know which was used for the John Lewis advert over Christmas. |

"Placebo running up that hill. So good Kate bush did the backing vocals.
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-hXEx_tgh3E"
Alan Partridge also covered this in his classic Kate Bush tribute medley. |
