I stayed in the movenpick hotel last year - fantastic, and about 5 minute walk from the centre of amsterdam.
Lovely hotel, big comfortable rooms, and quiet enough to get a good sleep!

There are a good few within walking distance of Dam Square....worth lookin online for reasonable ones.... |

Bit of a tip - don't drink on dam square itself - very expensive - head back a few streets, and its way better and right on the canals as well (and just a wee hop across a bridge takes you right into the red light district) |

Krasnapolsky Hotel Amsterdam Dam Square, I was there last year and it is in the middle of everything, has 3 doors entering/leaving which lead to all different area's of Amsterdam. red light area, shopping area and bars. really lovely hotel. x
