Read an article this morning about Darwin and his thoughts on what makes a long marriage/ partnership work. . .

Against the idea, he listed "the expense and anxiety of children" and the odd truth that a married man could never "go up in a balloon".

In favour of marriage, he included the acquisition of a "constant companion and friend in old age" and, memorably and conclusively, decided that a wife would be "better than a dog, anyhow".

What makes your marriage work ?

K&A

Hmmmm, not sure I should be posting on this thread as I'm now single but the pleasure of children far outweighs the anxiety . However, I think half the reason we split up was that we lost the ability to talk to each other. Instead we argued. We get on better now we aren't together anymore, so does that mean my marriage would have worked better if we lived in separate houses? I don't know. But sometimes I wish I'd learnt to talk more with her.

So I guess the moral of my story is, talk is good. Bottling it up is bad. And kids are great.

Not really pearls of wisdom I'm afraid

Our marriage works for the simple reason we love each other and are best friends and share everything together we can laugh together and laugh at each other.

Think that covers it for us

I would add in tolerance, respect and a willingness to accept change.

We've been married for nearly 30years,and to be honest,we still have a great time, but I also have a great time when I'm out with my mates,so it's more than that.

I could never define love, but I know thats the bond, that overrides all others.

For us, swinging has helped because it removed all if the petty things like jealousy and irrational mistrust. On top of all of the things mentioned above we now have a stronger and more loving relationship.

Not taking life too seriously and forgetting the past. Live life for the near future and always plan for something great in the far future. ( like our wedding lol 12 yrs and counting )

Most importantly, treat her like a princess, and him like a king. After all nothing in life is more important than each other.

Remembering to be silly and have fun together - (like spontaneously skipping hand in had down the high street).

Not getting stressed about giving in a lot.

Being patient (hey - I'm working on that one
