I have XBMC installed on my laptop which I can connect to my TV via a HDMI connection to watch stuff I've downloaded from the web and torrent sites.
What I don't fully understand is what part does the Apple Tv Box play in the set up? Does this provide the live streams via channels and add ons? Thanks for info in advance |

Im just about to buy a jailbroken ATV from Ebay.
When you say any channel,
Does that mean you can watch for example Sky Sports without having a Sky subscription??x |

The great thing with the box is that it would be connected to the net directly and so when you turn on your tv the channels would just come up.
Likewise you can stream via your iphone or mac straight to your tv so say you load a programme on an app on your phone it will run on your tv with no wires.
Thats my understanding anyway! I bought a Western Digital box before but whilst that had some channels on it there wasnt very many and it didnt have the ability to take the feed from your phone or comp!

Just now I have a cable that goes from my iphone into tv so I can load something on iphone netflix app and it plays on the tv but the apple tv box would supersede that!

Laptop via hdmi into tv....you need to use laptop to change channels...feeds etc.....apple tv...connect to tv via hdmi....change channel..feeds etc....using the remote or iphone or ipad...etc....and will stream faster as solely xbmc installed |

So, the only difference is the way your changing channels, thanks for clearing that up. |

Apple tv is also smoother n faster due to being a sole unit and not having stuff installed that you would have on a laptop etc....using up memory.....hope that helps |

I just bought a Raspberry Pi, stuck on an XBMC linux distro and a £3 remote. less than £30 and Bob's yer wotnot. I always thought ATVs were overpriced for what you got from them.
Not for everyone but then I am a linux user and developer and a bit of a geek. |

You can use your iPhone or android as a remote control for the Pi
Either the official XMBC remote or Yatse
Can't get BBC iplayer to work on it for some reason, would like some help getting it to work |

"Yup. Video is fast because the Raspberry pi runs HD video well. The only block is my broadband speed."
Raspberry Pi and Xbmc is great, have mine connected to my NAS drive to play stored music vids and pics, why pay for Apple TV |
