The words shipment, cargo and freight are synonyms, which means they often are used in place of each other. But they do actually have small differences in meaning.
Shipment comes from the verb to ship which originally meant to transport something by means of a ship on the ocean or a large body of water. So if goods (products desired by people) were sent by ship they were a shipment. This term eventually became applied to goods sent by train, wagon, trucks, airplanes, etc even though they were not ships. So now the word shipment is a general term for goods that are sent to another place by any form of transportation to be sold somewhere else.
The actual physical goods that are shipped are called cargo or freight. A shipment consists of an amount of cargo or freight that can be shipped at one time. Maybe your cargo or freight requires several shipments at different times or on several transportation devices. So the cargo or freight can be broken down into several shipments.
Cargo comes from the Spanish word which means to load or put physical items on a form of transportation. It emphasizes that the physical goods had to be moved onto the ship, truck or plane. So it is the actual products being shipped as boxes or crates that had to be loaded. Over time the word cargo has been used more for larger vehicles like ships and airplanes. That is why goods transported by airplane or ship are placed in the cargo hold.
Freight comes from the German language and emphasizes that goods are shipped for a fee or cost. It can actually mean the cost one pays for the shipment. What is the freight for shipping two hundred crates of English dictionaries? More money than I have. Because freight is associated with cost, it can also mean a cheaper method of shipping. You can ship by freight (slower or in large amounts) for a cheaper price. But for faster and smaller shipments you can ship by express for a more expensive rate. Over time, freight has taken the meaning of cargo that is shipped by truck or train. That is why a train that only transports goods is called a freight train.  |

Frieght is recognised customer cargo, cargo is from as little as a 1 kg =box to the wings of an airbus in another plane, then theres on board courier, which gets chhucked in the hold of plane like luggage, then there are passengers on flights who's sole job is to "hand carry" the shipment to its destination, and to guarantee no delay, they fly business class so that seat is guarantee'd etc
