Only ever experienced this at one hotel when there was a party night on, even then I think it was more to stop people randomly walking in off the street, flash of 1 room card and they didn’t ask any questions. |

When we check in we always ask for an extra room card. Then if we bring anyone back we give them a card before we go in. If we get asked if we are all residents ( more likely to get asked if your a couple with a single guy) we can give a quick flash of the cards and reception thinks we have 2 rooms |

"Only ever seen this in Yotel and MotelOne in Glasgow
Isn’t that more for the bar than anything else"
No mate motel one has doormen at the entrance with a list of residents and room numbers |

I'm a hotel night manager and while few hotels have security, most city centre hotels will do some form of check if you are walking in after a certain time. Usually just a flash of the key is enough but some may dig deeper.
I no longer work in the city centre but from a recent experience, if you get caught out, be respectful and don't argue the toss.... you won't win |
