Old Glasgow Fair
Jump to: Newest in thread
We are now in the first week of the Glasgow fair but it doesn’t seem such a big thing like it did years ago .
So what’s your memories of the old Glasgow fair if you are from Glasgow of course .
Mine was being taken in to old Glasgow toon for new clothes for our holiday.
When I say holiday it was always a two week break to mum & dads caravan in Tighnabruaich.
I loved it there !
During the day we would go wee trips out and about or just chill at the caravan on the beach .
At night it would be snacks ,ginger & a game of cards or domino’s .
Then every other night we’d go out for dinner & a drink to the Kames hotel known to the locals as The Glue Pot because there wasn’t much in the village and everyone who lived there gravitated to The Glue Pot lol
Lots of happy memories of that time .
So what are your memories of the old Glasgow fair ? |

"2 weeks in a caravan at Sandylands staring out the big windae and hoping the pishin rain would stop " we mostly had good summers back then but at other times of the year it would pour .
I loved listening to the rain in the van .
We used to go into the woods in the pouring rain and pick hazelnuts of the trees lol |

I remember at nighttime’s us all going to different vans for the adults to have a wee drink then once the booze kicked in they would come out and play rounders with us kids .
Happy days ! |

I've lived up here a few years and never been as not lived close enough.
Now living in Glasgow, is this something worth going to? I would be by myself but that wouldn't bother me unless it's more family orientated?? |

"Coming from a big family, when we finished school, that was us until we returned back. Glasgow Fair had no significance as my Father worked endlessly to provide for his kids. " understandably !
My dads work closed down for the fair fortnight . |

I think he has. It's not a travelling fair. The fair was the annual 2 weeks summer holiday, when all the different industries shut down.
Each area had a different 2 weeks but many of them over lapped.
We used to go camping around Scotland, usually in the rain Then on 1 occasioned went to the south west of England and it rained there as well. The tent blew inside out because of the high winds.
The fair down here finished at the weekend and those that still take it would have gone back to work this morning |

Ah ok so it's not like some big festival thing held in Glasgow? I knew Glasgow shut down for the 2 weeks but always thought there was some big mad festival bit like Edinburgh having the Fringe.
Will this be why my doctors are shut today for what it says is a public holiday? |

Middle of the school holidays, right at the heart of the summertime, so usually pishing down. When I was wee, it was family holidays in Blackpool or down the Ayrshire coast. All the big works shut down for the fortnight, dad got three weeks wages, and Largs had a two weeks hyperinflation. You met half your neighbourhood in Blackpool or Morecambe. It's much changed. |

Caravans and rain
God help you if you burst the gas mantle!!!
Endless games of cards!!!!
Changing the gas bottle.
That noise as the rain battered the caravan
I still hate the noise of rain battering down on a Tesco roof, scared for life! |
