Teachers Pay Continued

I have just read most of the comments about the teacher pay rise and to say I’m horrified at some is an understatement!

People have a very short memory about lockdown, where you were having to homeschool your own children and realised that life of a teacher was not easy. The planning, getting the kids motivated to learn, behaviour Issues etc!

11.5% over 2 years is a lot, especially when it’s been backdated a whole year. I’m sure most teachers would have been happy with a lot less. I also completely agree that it shouldn’t be just teachers as the catering, cleaning, janitorial and support staff work just as hard and the school couldn’t run without them but they can leave their job at work…teachers can’t!

Just to clarify a few things too…all teachers get paid the same depending on how many years they have worked, whether it’s primary or secondary! All did the same degree. It’s capped at 5 years, like being an apprentice. You get a wage rise for every year you work, til qualified. Promoted staff are different like in other jobs. And an average teacher earns just over £40000 whether it’s 5 years or 10…£55000 we wish! Also if the pay rise goes through, puts teachers into the higher tax bracket but they haven’t complained about that, so some of the pay rise goes back to the government and back into education! Teachers work hard, there are some amazing teachers out there who are changing the lives of our future generations to come. They should be supported and not chastised! Sorry for the rant…insomnia is a bitch at times x x

Away and boil yer heed, Lockdown where teachers and most other council employees were getting 80% wage from government and the rest made up from council. While a lot of other people were stuffed and companies paid them off and got nothing. Most parents struggled with the home schooling aspect due to the environment the kids were in and not being in the mind set to learn as to them it just felt like a big holiday. I’m not saying teachers don’t deserve a pay rise far from it but at which cost???? It’s gotta come from somewhere so all that’s gonna happen is Peter Is gonna suffer to pay Paul. It’s a very selfish society and I believe everyone needs a pay rise across the board but instead of everybody being happy with a small slice of the cake which will be more spread it seems like the gimme gimme attitude is taking over wanting the maximum and stuff everyone else as long as we get sorted out. What about the groundskeeper at the local park I’m sure he deserves a pay rise from the council but can’t get it because the teachers and big unions have gotten what they can get leaving the little fish struggling without any leverage. Just my opinion and I work in the private sector so no luxury of council wiping my arse when I’m not happy

You will find it was 100% pay as they were working from home full time! Try doing that and trying to support your own children with their learning, but don’t hear me greeting about it. And I agree everyone deserves a pay rise. We all work damn hard for it, unfortunately in a society where every penny is a prisoner. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, that’s what debates are for! I’m just sick of people tarring all teachers with the same brush.

I think teachers - not unlike nurses - deserve every penny they can get.

Parents struggled to home school their children during lockdown as many of them were working full time from home too and had to be their child’s teacher, mother, janitor, dinner lady, cleaner and friend - that’s entirely different from being a teacher at school.

My sons teacher certainly didn’t work full time during lockdown, be lucky if she was available more than 3 hours per week. She set out work on a Monday for the week which my son completed in an hour so I had to set him tasks so he wasn’t completely bored or on his Xbox all day then played games with him during his lunch break all while working full time from home.

Yes some go above and beyond but definitely not all, that doesn’t mean they aren’t due a fair pay rise though.

Lockdown was horrible. There was no consistency across the board for schools, across primary or secondary. Working a full time time table and being available for pupils instead of my own children was a very hard pill to swallow, but it was what I was being paid to do. It was my own children’s school that let them down.

In a fair world everyone would get the same wage increase! The whole thing is shite! Could be debated til everyone is blue in the face, will never get everyone to agree. We all just need to fight for what we believe and know that we did the best for our own situations! X

I think it's more concerning that the political elite has got worker attacking worker. The more you attack each other, they win.

They created inflation. They get their pay rise regardless. Everyone deserves at least an inflation value pay rise, otherwise, you are simply falling behind, devaluing your work.

If you believe someone is overpaid, try applying for that job. Don't complain or fight amongst yourselves, fight the greedy fuckers in government and finance, because they're laughing at you fighting amongst yourself.

This exactly.

Too many throwing toys out the pram cause they perceive others to be getting more than they are.

Remember austerity where public sector workers had a pay freeze for about 10 years. Well its about time they got their dues. This isn't greed of teachers nurses etc. It's them trying to catch up after having years of no rise at all.

I'm all for it. All wages need to rise and ithas to start somewhere

the land of unicorns and fairytales

I’m all for the pay rises, when I was working in my last few jobs I was earning in excess of £50k per year and don’t get me wrong I worked incredibly hard to get to that level of income and respect however sometimes I felt embarrassed by how much o got paid for how little I actually done(don’t get me wrong I did a lot more than the men getting paid the same !!! )

Even when I was teaching because I wasn’t on a fixed contract I earned about 2.5/3 times what the full time teaching staff were earning !! That in itself is scary was only after 3 years they were like nope we need to employ three part time or two full time staff can’t keep paying you but could they get three staff to cover what I was doing ? Nope !! They managed to get one part time and he left to go work abroad after 6 months Because it’s hard work

You shouldn't be embarrassed because of how much you get paid. You were paid for the knowledge & experience you have and difficult decisions you would be expected to make.

Bullshit, many teachers are on £50,000 plus and go check the salary of highest paid Head teachers.

plus if you think £40,000 average wage is poor then you need to open your eyes and see what other employees pay.

yes your entitled to a rant, same as im entitled to say you are overpaid and do not deserve the pay rise you got.

If a teacher gets £50k they will be in a promoted or management position rather than in a class. This is the same in every industry or sector where mangers get paid more than those who do the primary job.

The average FT salary was just over £38k where as the median FT salary was just over £31k.

Other employers get away with paying low salaries because they know their employees and claim various benefits.

Even after this current offer (if accepted) teachers pay is down ~30% since 2008.

Also if your view is "everyone else is poorly paid so why should they get more" please take a moment to reflect, as you are temporarily part of the problem.

Correct. That's the attitude that they want, worker against worker, and it's bang out of order.

Don't cowtow to the elitist minority who have all the money, and don't want you to have any of it.
