Gender reform bill
Jump to: Newest in thread
Whatever your views for or against the bill itself this has shown how Scotland might have some choices over how we run by having our Scottish parliament but at the end of the day we’re stuck with whatever Westminster chooses
From a personal view on the actual bill itself I’m disappointed that this has happened and the impact this will have on those who are so vulnerable already, there’s nothing worse than thinking you have an opportunity for a better life promised and then taken away from you
It’s defo a sad day and a step
Backwards towards gender equality |

End of the day its got nothing to do with the specific bill… snp wanted to show the world that westminster is dictator over a elected devolved goverment… its just another evidence in there snp arsenl for independence…
No one is looking at the bill saying it was good idea or bad idea or a small percentage is… there now all looking at the big picture of how westminster stopped the legislation and what else they ll stop in the future…
Politics at its best. |

Ignoring the fact that polling show majority of Scots are against(60% against, 20% for) the changes attempting to be made by this bill, we're all aware that the devolved Scottish parliament cannot make changes that affect UK wide legislation. Equalities Act is a Reserved issue and one part of the UK can't change the definition of who is protected in that act.
We're simultaneously being told that this Bill is transformational while also being an administrative change. Can't be both. If changing the sex marker on a birth certificate is the difference between someone having a better life or not then this is already achievable in the UK by getting a GRC.
Also don't see this affecting Scottish indy opinion at all, especially since SNP have no interest in jumping off the gravy train and actually achieving it. Brexit, Boris, Tory incompetence and corruption barely moved the needle so the right for any male to legally become female just on their say so won't affect it either.
I support indy (but will not vote SNP again under current leadership) but I'm glad our imperial overlords in Westminster have blocked this bill. Go have a listen to Maggie Chapman's LBC interview yesterday to see what lunacy they're ultimately protecting us from. |

Again notes that it always seems to be male to female that gets talked about or mentioned ! No one ever seems to care when a female desires to transition to male !! |

I dont think so.
there have been hundreds of bills that have been passed - this is the first that hasn't? So we are not stuck with whatever Westminister chooses ?

What's more important than changing ur gender is the failing education system. We have a generation that are influenced by social media and peers. Whose going to support the Scottish economy if we do ever get independence. Rather it will be a burden. |

The fact that it could make it easier for anyone, male or female, to commit sexual offences, which it potentially could, makes me, for once and probably the only time, agree with Westminster! |

It's only a change on getting a certificate. This is nothing new. The certificate its self has been around for almost thirty years now. Westminster was going to change it. Back in 2017 it got to a second reading in Westminster. But then everything was pushed out of the road for Brexit. Its a storm in a tea cup. People just don't know that this certificate even was in existence for so long. But the tory press have done a job for Westminster stirring it up. I dont know if anyone even noticed but from 4 May this year you need a picture id to actually vote now. Later on Wednesday thousands of Europe laws could go. Including the human rights act. This means you could be dead when under arrest and no enquiry or compassion for your family, your son could be sent to war with defective equipment and no action or responsibility taken. No right to a fair trial. Killed at work and no competition for your family. The list gos on and on. On top of the new legislation to sack you if you go on strike. Arrested at home for thinking of going to a march or protest. Tagged,be told to report to a police station every week or even jailed. This same legislation covers Orange walks, any threat of violence or to loud it can be stopped. Welcome to fascist state of Westminster. I don't know if anyone is actually paying them attention right now. Sites like this could be band. As now managers of online platforms can be jailed. What a lovely nation we are becoming. |

To comment on your post. To the best of my knowledge, in the uk there has never been a case where a man has posed as a female in a female only space and committed a sexual offence.
It should also be noted, that the lobbyists have done a better job in Westminster than Edinburgh, this btw is American white supremacy money doing the work - no party in power is going to refuse it.
Ignore that if you want, but there is more to this than most people realise.
As for the current now political and soon to be court issue, - I should make it clear, NS I think is poison and about to pass over 5he reigns- it brings Scotland into line with the rest of Europe and the more forward thinking countries in the world.
The minimum age should be 18. Unlike some that wish to comment, I’m in the system, I’m on the referral list with an expected 4-5 years still to go to see a specialist. I speak from direct experience.
Remember, do not confuse gender and sexuality. |

If people want to commit sexual offences against others, they don't need to put on a dress to do it.
How does changing someone's birth certificate equate to being a predator? It doesn't. |

"A bill voted on by members of every Party. This is about democracy and we need no lessons from a Palace that uses words like Lords and Commons.
Smash the Union. "
Well that's never going to happen. It's that sort of rhetoric that allows the SNP to do nothing and stay in power. |

The bottom line is that equalities is not a devolved power and NS knew before she started that it would be stopped. If SNP had wanted this to pass they could have used their 50 MPs in Westminister to bring in a UK wide change but that wouldn't allow NS to blame Westminister. It was the same with the referendum the Scottish government legal team told her she didn't have the power but she went to court and lost to try and blame Westminister. On the other hand NHS and education are devolved powers but she doesn't seem interested in focusing on making them better in Scotland then she might win more people over to think things could be better in Scotland. Its all a smoke screen to hide failing NHS, education, ferries and so on. Scotland could be so much better but personally I don't think the current administration have the will to achieve that they would rather run Scotland down to try and blame Westminister for not allowing independence.

To be clear, 89 elected MSPs, from all parties, voted for this bill,36 voted against including 9 SNP MSPs. Are we living in a democracy or not? Just digest that, 89 democratically appointed MSPs voted for the bill and yet along comes Westminster and the blue rinse brigade with their 6 Scottish MPs and crushes the rights of the transgender community. At the same time over 3% of the Met police are being investigated for sex crimes or domestic abuse. I am more wary of a police officer than someone from the trans community. |

Last time they knew fine well the Supreme court would throw out the question of legality of a referendum without Westminster approval. Wasted a quarter of a million knowingly |

To be clear they might as well of voted on sending the Scottish football team to the moon. They do not have the power to implement their decision so why waste time voting on it. I do however agree with your point about the police. |

If this wasn't a devolved power the Attorney General would have blocked it with section 33.
This is political - The tories are trying to stop a law that *they* don't like.
And Labour have hardly covered themselves in glory either. If they don't oppose - what are the even for? |

I suppose they didn't oppose because they realised there were more important things to concentrate on. Little things like the cost of living, NHS in dire straits, police riddles with rapists etc. Tbh she needs to go the way of that loony lefty in NZ. |

Totally agree. This is the equivalent of Scotland deciding they will drive on the right hand side of the road. Was never going to pass and they are using the trans community as a political football. |

Regardless of how it came to pass through Holyrood, if it breaches the rules of devolution and impinges on UK law (which the SNP were well warned of but ploughed on regardless), then you can expect it to be challenged.

Norfolk??? Your geography is as dodgy as your politics. It's all very rhetorical. If your best strategy is to try and tar me as a woman hater or a Rishi fan I'd stick to the less intellectually demanding threads. |

Can't even face reading the comments on here.
This is not an SNP ploy, this is basic rights that had CROSS PARTY SUPPORT.
Rishi is the only one turning this into an anti trans propoganda.
I am not trans, and it may seem strange as a crossdresser but I have struggled to understand trans identity as I have always felt you can do and dress how you feel no matter your gender.
More recently I have come to realise, I don't have to fucking understand. It really doesn't affect me in any real way. People are just using this in a way to showcase their bigotry in the same way they did when homosexuality was illegal, in support of section 28, being against gay marriage. Every time they have been proved wrong - If you are against this - you are on the wrong side of history, good news is, you're probably old and will be dead before me anyway. |

I think you must not have understood my previous post. It's UK legislation of which I'm a resident. Of course if I had come on the forum and agreed with you I doubt you would care where I lived. I haven't said whether I agree with it or not but 62% of Scottish people don't. |

Sorry but your analysis of the issue is dreadful. Just because it's not going the way want it to, you accuse people of bigotry and celebrate their deaths. It's the sort of attitude displayed by spoilt little brats not grown ups.
You don't even live here - its none of your fucking business.
Well actually I think you'll find that we all live in the UK where the responsibility for this legislation resides.
You're on the Scotland forum you fuckwit. Even if you were right (you're not by the way) then air your views elsewhere. When you don't live in Scotland, you don't get a say on what our government does.
I do think you need to do some deep introspection though and ask why you are so obsessed with minor administrative legislation that involves trans people. Why are you so obsessed with trans people?
I think you must not have understood my previous post. It's UK legislation of which I'm a resident. Of course if I had come on the forum and agreed with you I doubt you would care where I lived. I haven't said whether I agree with it or not but 62% of Scottish people don't. "
I think you misunderstood my post. Why do you care so much about trans people? Do you know any? |

"Can't even face reading the comments on here.
"Whatever your views for or against the bill itself this has shown how Scotland might have some choices over how we run by having our Scottish parliament but at the end of the day we’re stuck with whatever Westminster chooses
From a personal view on the actual bill itself I’m disappointed that this has happened and the impact this will have on those who are so vulnerable already, there’s nothing worse than thinking you have an opportunity for a better life promised and then taken away from you
It’s defo a sad day and a step
Backwards towards gender equality "
Were we promised 'better lives' by wee Nicola? Everyone? Or just a select few? |

Holyrood is a shit show. It shows how massively out of touch our politicians are that they voted for this when again the silent majority have grave concerns and would definitely not have if it had been by referendum for example (and I'm certainly not advocating that). The SNP very definitely have played the independence card here and are using gender politics in the same kind of way as race politics and the wealth divide etc to further stoke division and fester hatred of conservatives and the English among their followers. Many can't see the wood for the trees of what they are part of unfortunately for Scotland. |

Exactly, I think most people feel the same way. For some of the minority that don't it's just to easy to employ a tacky crass strategy and accuse you of transphobia. |

This whole issue is down to the SNP deciding to use the trans community as a political pawn in their larger Indyref campaign. They’ve been told numerous times that Devolved laws cannot legally impact Reserved matters or reserved laws. Even the Equality & Human Rights Commission told the SNP the bill was flawed and pointed out the areas where it was impacting matters outside their Legislative Competence. If the SNP are daft enough to take this to the UKSC its likely to be a short case as previous judgements on Devolved Laws will be used to remind them it’s something they can’t do.
Btw, the S35 order is only 1 route to stopping the bill at the border, even if the SNP somehow manage to win in court. |

"End of the day its got nothing to do with the specific bill… snp wanted to show the world that westminster is dictator over a elected devolved goverment… its just another evidence in there snp arsenl for independence…
No one is looking at the bill saying it was good idea or bad idea or a small percentage is… there now all looking at the big picture of how westminster stopped the legislation and what else they ll stop in the future…
Politics at its best."
Exactly this nail on the head right there |

Saw the protest on social media. Not surprised the Police are now investigating the threatening and offensive placards on show by protesters.
Even less surprising was seeing certain elected people on site and then claiming they didn’t see the placards on display. |
