It seems everything now is online and the art of conversation is lost! I know people who will not pick up a phone to chat and much prefer to text, Whatsapp or email rather engage in conversation. It seems we are now controlled by the keyboard and not the spoken word. Thoughts please? |

Lmao - indeed, levels of irony here. Let's discuss this on an online chat forum, by typing our responses
Added irony is that people always think a letter is perfectly quaint and lovely, as it is personal. It was written... a WhatsApp is shorter, but you are able, if you want, to think about what you write.
Loses the spontaneity of chatter on the phone, though.
I've always found mobile phones ringing to be annoying. The other person just expects you to stop whatever you are doing and pay attention to them. So I prefer a text, or an arranged time for chats.
In many ways, people connect and communicate more with texts and WhatsApp etc, so I like it. |

The Art of Conversation... is not dead!
Like language and vocabulary themselves, the art evolves as do the tools.
So as fine art changed with changing paints, inks and techniques, we have new tools, and some embrace them, some don't.
Use the tools that work best for you in expressing what you want to express and how.
I agree with previous posts that a phone call can be demanding and intrusive unless agreed or expected.
SMS or PMs can be less intrusive and more enquiring... would you like to chat...
As with everything, there are those that are more proficient than others in communicating with the available tools, but they don't stop us making an effort!
My personal favourite form of communication is body language... |

I don't think it's lost, it's just different. I think the internet and the anonymity aspect allows people to express themselves much more freely.
In terms of texting I think that too makes us communicate more, I'm much more likely to send someone a quick text for something that I wouldn't go to the effort of calling for. It also suits our lives more, the message is there waiting for a reply when possible as opposed to missed calls. |

I'm interested in the whole voice notes thing. Not really got into it yet, but intrigued as obviously you can leave a personal message with all the subtle inflection of spoken conversation, albeit 1-way. |

"This thread is ironic
Certainly more ironic than...
?? Having ten-thousand spoons,
When all you need is a knife! ??"
I'd love to think that the most ironic aspect of that song was that the vast majority of her ironic statements were no, in fact, ironic.
Alas. I suspect the lyricist just didn't understand irony.

Yes, the actual voice you hear is important. |
