'North' / Highlands

We live just North of Inverness, there are about 120 miles above us to get to the North coast. I originally come from the Western Isles. I know it's just down to commmonly used terms ,b tu it's always funny to hear folk saying that they live in The Highlands (capital H) when they stay around Perth of Aberdeen. Or when they say they stay in the 'North' of Scotland, then they're in Milngavie (!) or they say that they stay in the 'central (!) belt, when they are located in Ayrshire (being in the lower 6th portion of Scotland).

Yes, pedantic point, but it's amazing how many folk we speak to initially think that they must stay 'close' to us as we're in the North(?esque) of Scotland, then they find out that they live about 200 miles South! It must be even worse for those folks up in Sutherland and Caithness. We often complain that the Americans don't know about the geography of anything outside their state, but is it the same for many Scots...? From a Sheepshagger!

Inverness

..or when people describe themselves as living in 'North East UK' ... and they're actually in Grimsby, or Durham ... in North East ENGLAND...,

Do they honestly not know the difference?

Maybe not to the same degree but half of the "Dundee" Fabbers don't live in there! It's amazing the number who put that on their profile because it's the nearest city and they don't want to be identified from whatever village they live in.

Seems fair enough to me!

The real plonkers, imho, are the ones who have as their location something like, "somewhere", "a town near you", "over the rainbow", or something equally daft and useless. I would never message these folk as it suggests they're not really interested in meeting!!
