Hidden Disabilities

These include but are not limited to

* Psychiatric Disabilities—Examples include major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, etc

* HIV/AIDS

* Diabetes

* Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

* Attention Deficit-Disrorder or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder(ADD/ADHD)

* Arthritis

* Crohns Disease

* IBS

* Sjögrens Syndrome

* Heart Disease

* PoTS

* Ehlers Danlos Syndrome

* Bowel Disease (including needing a stoma)

* Amputees (how can you tell if someone has part of a leg missing?)

* Medical conditions associated with hidden disabilities.

There will be many more that’s classed as having a hidden disability. And all these people who have one, myself included, are entitled to park in a disabled bay with the use of a Blue Badge. Even if they look relatively healthy.

No one is allowed to confront anyone who may have a hidden disability whether they think that person looks to be able bodied. The Blue Badge can now be given out to those at the top of the list. So no you may not see a disability but you do not know what that person is going through.

In the case of the young lady from the Colostomy post. Just because she was wearing sports gear, that insinuates that as a person with a Colostomy bag perhaps she shouldn’t have a life? Let alone park in a designated disable bay.

If you saw any of these people Derek Rae, David Devine, Johnnie Peacock park in a disabled bay, would you confront them? More importantly could you outrun them? I suspect not! If you don’t know who they are, I suggest you Google them.

IF you suspect someone is abusing a blue badge you can report them, you do not need the badge number, just the car’s registration, as when you apply for a badge you are asked for the main car’s registration that the badge is going to be used in.

Be Kind and Don’t Judge.

So by copying and pasting something you found on Google then that's all that matters?

What if let's say she's not the badge holder, its her disabled mother's badge and this young lady uses it illegally so she can park next to facilities, she doesn't wear a colostomy bag and is perfectly fit and healthy... she just lied when being confronted to get out of being caught using the badge and the disabled parking bay would you still say its ok??

The point the OP was making don't challenge the person.

Simply take a note of the registration number and report it too your local council.

I'm sick and tired when people stop me from using disabled facilities, Little do they know that I actually have 4 different disabilities that effect how I interact with other people.

without going to much into it I have already challenged a few people and turns out was right to do so, 1 guy was using his father's blue badge without his father's knowledge, the son was his designated driver but was using it illegally in order to park closer to facilities.

But the point is that before you approached him you would of had no idea if he had a hidden disability.

I could see the badge holders photo id attached to his sun visor and not on show ( which is also illegal) it was obvious it wasn't the son in the photo, I questioned him, he denied it, I took photographs as proof, informed the police and they took action.

I was right in my assumption that the son was using his father's badge for his own pleasure without his father's knowledge..

Do you know what it’s like to care for someone with any of the conditions above? My Mum didn’t have a blue badge but she did have Sjögren’s Syndrome. She could barely walk the length of herself unaided before being admitted to hospital. I spent months looking after her, trying to do her shopping and mine during lockdown. She ended up in hospital for 10 weeks before passing away from the autoimmune disease.

"Hidden disability or not…why are badge holders allowed to park free of charge?…."

Because they are! You try walking in their shoes for a day and see exactly why it benefits them to have a blue badge.

Is this open season on people with disabilities? It saddens me that people have such attitudes.

The question wasn't about why people have the badge though, it was why is the parking free ( if it is is as I don't know )

You see that's where you are totally wrong again, I could apply for a blue badge of my own but my train of thought is it'could go to someone much more in need for the use that it designed for, this guy I reported was Not disabled , he was using his dad's badge illegally and more importantly without his dads knowledge!! That hard to understand.?

Oh and I have never once abused by position of being my mother's designated driver, if my wheelchair bound mother has to attend hospital or dentist appointments I drive her there , take her into to get treated and bring her back home, my mother then takes her blue badge with her into her own home until its needed again in a few days time when I'm called into picking her up again.

So it is my place to challenge folk especially when it's found out to be true that he broke the law yge law states that the blue badge holder has to be in the car alongside their designated driver, this was not the case on the day I confronted the guy.

"Hidden disability or not…why are badge holders allowed to park free of charge?…."

It is only free in councils st parking or car parks . Private car parks NCP etc have disabled spaces but they pay to park same as everyone else . ( some do give a reduction to attract disable customers who bring usually at least 1 able bodied shopper as well )

In England although not used down there they limit time of free parking upto a max of three hours . There’s a lot more private operators there so less council alternatives .

Yes I agree that people should not misuse the blue badges but to take it back to the OP comments, Members of the public should not be approaching people to question if they are disabled or not.

If like the comments above someone is abusing the system then simply report them to local council and they will be warned about there conduct or might even get the badge revoked.

Disabled people already face being marginalised and while your intentions were good, what if he was disabled suffering with poor mental health and your comments caused him to harm himself.

Our action have far reaching consequences sometimes.

"Hidden disability or not…why are badge holders allowed to park free of charge?…."

Because able bodied people have the option of walking/cycling/getting the bus if they don't want to pay for parking.

People with disabilities generally have higher day to day living costs already.

The fact that ticket machines are too high to reach from a wheelchair also means councils would have to install extra machines.

I'd also like to know how it's even possible to check, the photo is on the back of the badge so not on display, it's also tiny so you'd need to be pretty close to see it.

I get that and its wrong but to go up and check peoples badges is a bit much, on the other post you were cracking up because someone "looked" fit enough to walk round a shop, you said youd be checking their badge, seriously what gives you the right? If you feel someone is using it illegally then call the appropriate authorities

I'd also like to know how it's even possible to check, the photo is on the back of the badge so not on display, it's also tiny so you'd need to be pretty close to see it."

that's just it squiggle , he wasn't displaying it properly, he had in on his survivor and I could see it from standing at the side of his car, I could see his father's photo and name and knew straight away it wasn't the sons badge. If the sons his designated driver he gas to have his father in the car with him if he's using the badge but the son was on his own.

"But the point is that before you approached him you would of had no idea if he had a hidden disability.

I could see the badge holders photo id attached to his sun visor and not on show ( which is also illegal) it was obvious it wasn't the son in the photo, I questioned him, he denied it, I took photographs as proof, informed the police and they took action.

I was right in my assumption that the son was using his father's badge for his own pleasure without his father's knowledge.."

How could you see the badge holders photo if it was attached to the sun visor and not on show? When you display the blue badge the IDing photo is on the reverse and not supposed to be on show, so not illegal.

As for your original question on my post - the only C&P’d bit is the list of hidden disabilities, the rest I penned at 5am. However please allow me to add MS, Epilepsy & Asthma to that list.

he had his sun visor down and it was attached with the badge facing outwards, I could easily see and read it. I don't think he was even bothered that much about displaying it properly as it's meant to be in the cars dashboard, he just chanced his luck and lost.

Well that's a unique case and you should've reported him.

Glasgow

Not surprised this has become a hot topic but arguing over the merits of a blue badge is all good and well and yes the privileges of them shouldn't be abused but them aside it astounds me the amount of people without a blue badge anywhere that use the bays.

I would say typically anytime I park to shop etc the amount of cars in disabled bays with no badge anywhere ranges from 25 - 50% of them. Parent child bays are as notoriously as bad but harder to prove.

Last week cause I picked up a Costa I didn't rush into Asda for shopping so me and partner sat in car for about 20mins and in that time we seen easily 12 cars park in parent child bays and only 1 had a child.

Had to tell guy don't as he did comment he was tempted to shout to them you forgot your child or something similar.

So yes some have credentials to use these bays and may abuse it for instance son using fathers badge but the problem is much deeper and wider and lies with society all round and lack of wardens checking these bays.

"Hidden disability or not…why are badge holders allowed to park free of charge?….

Because they are! You try walking in their shoes for a day and see exactly why it benefits them to have a blue badge.

The question wasn't about why people have the badge though, it was why is the parking free ( if it is is as I don't know )"

If anyone wants to know why badge holder get free parking please ask your council, because there’s nothing on the Govt website to answer it.

Some people may feel the need to challenge and some people don't.

Challenging someone committing the offence in my opinion won't make the said person stop doing it.

Worse case scenario they could pull a knife on you or some other weapon.

Is it not safer to take a pic and report, that protects your safety and the person's dignity if they do happen to have a hidden disability.

So no I won't be told to be kind to some people and Yes I will judge some people on occasions especially when it's blatantly obvious a misuse a system designed to help the MOST vulnerable. "

Unless you PERSONALLY know this girl not to have a stoma bag and to be as fit as the next person then you have absolutely no right to accuse her or anyone else of abusing the Blue Badge system. Do you have a Blue Badge yourself? Have you ANY idea the process you have to go through to get one? Just in case you don’t or for anyone else who doesn’t know here it is.

There are TWO ways to apply for a badge. Firstly you apply through a form from your local council. The Blue Badge scheme is recognised nationally and throughout Europe. However it’s your local council that gives it out and the criteria may slightly differ from one city to another.

So you fill out the form. There are TWO sections to the form. If you are receiving PIP or a child under 16 but over 2, is receiving DLA and (both) have the mobility component, you only have to fill one section of the form, and send in the award letter as proof, a recent passport sized photo, and payment (£20 in Scotland, £10 in England, it’s free in Wales)

If you do not receive these benefits, you can fill in the entire form, wait to be assessed by a council doctor, who ask questions about your condition, and see you walk a given length (like down a hallway) he is looking for discrepancies in your gait, and the speed, the place it takes place in will also have CCTV so you will have been filmed coming in and going out, and this is reviewed and matched with how you walk when asked too. When the decision is made, you will either be sent a blue badge and your payment processed, or returned to you, with a letter explaining why you didn’t get the badge. You will have to wait a further 6 months before you can reapply

I didn’t post this to cause an argument but for information on possible conditions that cannot be seen by other humans, but it would seem that some people deem themselves to be the defenders of the Blue Badge race - which actually IMO can be deemed as disability racism.

If you’re going to report someone you suspect of abusing the system - report it to the correct department of the city council and not the police as it’s not a police matter, all they do is hand it over to the council if they have time.

To all those challenging people face to face, who gave you that authority? So many indignant little "officials" who think it's OK to offend. Take a note of the car number and report it. When I see people ranting about this I think of Kartman "respect my authority"! Hidden disability is just that, you don't know the persons medical history but you think you've the right to challenge them?

"Some people may feel the need to challenge and some people don't.

Challenging someone committing the offence in my opinion won't make the said person stop doing it.

Worse case scenario they could pull a knife on you or some other weapon.

Is it not safer to take a pic and report, that protects your safety and the person's dignity if they do happen to have a hidden disability.

"Challenging someone committing the offence in my opinion won't make the said person stop doing it"....It did stop him from doing it as he was removed from being his father's designated driver and fined.

"Worse case scenario they could pull a knife on you or some other weapon"... I can handle myself so was never in danger, even then if he did try and attack me he would have that as an extra charge on top of breaking the law whilst illegally using a disabled badge that doesn't belong to him.

And finally "Is it not safer to take a pic and report, that protects your safety and the person's dignity if they do happen to have a hidden disability"... Yes and thats exactly what I done and was proven right that I acted correctly.

1. You reporting him is what got his right to use the blue badge removed.

Not you challenging him in the street.

2. Not everyone can handle thereselves

3. I'm very surprised the council gave you any information of the outcome as this would breach confidentiality laws surely.

He shouldn't have been using it full stop

"

Out of curiosity WHO did you report him too? the police who then told me to report it to North Lanarkshire Council. I was surprised to hear back from the council after the son was fined £250 and was removed from being his father's designated driver, but hey ho, it's the sons own stupid fault for illegally using something that wasnt intended for him to use."

See, I don’t believe you when you say that the NLC “got back to you” and told you what the outcome was unless you know someone who works there and disclosed this info to you, in which case they were also breaking the law (data protection) and risking their own job. Once you’ve reported something it ceases to be your business.

Also, I don’t believe that the BB holder got to keep the badge unless he has some really horrible disease like Emphysema or COPD, or worse, as like you say in a previous post, the holder should keep the badge in their possession at all times, so if they are not going to be in the car, the badge should leave the car when they do when not being used.

1st of all, I was part of the case when it went to court as I reported him so I'm entitled to find out what the outcome was.

2ndly the BB holder was the father not the son, the father obviously kept his badge but his son was removed from ever being his designated driver again. 3rd, the badge is allocated to the holder and not a vehicle, I'm one of 3 people who can be my mother's designated driver so if I can't take my mother to appointments one of my other brothers can, my mother just brings out her badge and leaves it on display I whoever cars she in.

"These include but are not limited to

* Psychiatric Disabilities—Examples include major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, etc

* HIV/AIDS

* Diabetes

* Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

* Attention Deficit-Disrorder or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder(ADD/ADHD)

* Arthritis

* Crohns Disease

* IBS

* Sjögrens Syndrome

* Heart Disease

* PoTS

* Ehlers Danlos Syndrome

Does your be kind message also apply to people above who have used one of these conditions above to get the badge in the first place. By all means I'm saying if your require a badge then by all means get one. BUT , just because your ENTITLED to have one doesn't automatically make it right that you should abuse that entitlement.

Here's the criteria for using a disabled bay in Glasgow or more so why it's there.

.

The Blue Badge scheme is for people with severe mobility problems which makes them unable or virtually unable to walk or those who are registered blind.  It allows Blue Badge holders to park in restricted areas.  For example, if you have a blue badge you can park free and for any length of time at on-street pay and display areas.

.

.

OK FFS READ the very first sentence .....

What part of running around constituted severe mobility problems or virtually unable to walk.

How can anyone argue the point that this girl was being kind to others. Whether she had a badge or not she did not NEED to park there.

So no I won't be told to be kind to some people and Yes I will judge some people on occasions especially when it's blatantly obvious a misuse a system designed to help the MOST vulnerable.

"

So you've given me the criteria but totally ignored the first line where it states , severe mobility issues or trouble walking. Clearly running around is OK.

For those saying they could attack me , if they could catch me it proves the point they shouldn't have parked there in the first place and I was right. For those that can't catch me .... Well there's not really a down side to challenging them is there.

I'm joking before the snowflakes get all up in arms.

I was right in my assumption that the son was using his father's badge for his own pleasure without his father's knowledge..

I don't think he was even bothered that much about displaying it properly as it's meant to be in the cars dashboard, he just chanced his luck and lost."

Doesn’t have to be on the dashboard, people put it there as it’s the easiest place, but it could be stuck to the window or attached to the sun visor. It cannot be on any side window or parcel shelf at the back of the car as some cars have tinted windows and could be missed by a parking attendant/parking wardens

All council car parks are free, all supermarket car parks are free or have a time limit. Likes of NCP, you do not need to pay even if you are not a bb holder as it is a private company and any Parking Charge Notice (which is what private companies give out), if you do not pay it, they are unlikely to chase you for it as it costs them more to do this than it will cost you to just pay it. Done it many times myself as have family members who don’t hold a badge, none of us have ever been charged!

I was right in my assumption that the son was using his father's badge for his own pleasure without his father's knowledge..

My mum always places it on the dashboard before getting out of the car, makes its more visible for others to see it..

So what?!! What you or your mum does doesn’t make it fucking law!! All I was saying is that there are other places that’s acceptable to place it, so long as it can be seen by authorities that need to see it and busybodies like you that’s all that matters! Jeez!

wtaf? Get off your highhorse, I was mainly pointing out the fact if the badge is attached to the inside of a window it could easily fall off, lot of good it would be if people in authorities can't see the thing if it's lying on the floor, get a grip Mrs!

No you weren’t there is nothing in any of your posts that say anything about about it being attached to a window , if it’s attached to a window how TF is it going to fall off?

Keep patting yourself on your back because no one else is doing it for you I have my dashcam attached to my front screen window and it's fallen off on numerous occasions, I also have a mobile holder and surprise surprise thats also fallen off my window bit if you superglue your BB to your windows it might stay on longer "

Dashcam? Phone holder? How did that enter the equation?

Maybe if you moisten the plastic bit it will stay on longer. Superglue isn’t recommended for windows. But good old sellotape works well…..

Have a good Monday

the land of unicorns and fairytales

Let’s not forget as well that people who were entitled to a blue badge previously and perhaps for most of their lives may now not be entitled to a blue badge since the benefit entitlement changed and many folk even lost their mobility cars because of it, people who previously were in the middle rate mobility range are now in the low rate mobility which doesn’t entitle you to a badge, although some local authorities are flexible others not so much.

Some places like Tesco for instance can issue you with a disabled pass that usually lasts for a year as well as a parent and child parking pass which lasts for 5years by showing other forms of proof of entitlement, it’s only council parking etc that enforces blue badge disabled parking

I don’t look disabled well that’s mostly because when my disability isn’t affecting me I can go out and do all the normal things I want to, when I’m really bad sometimes I can’t even get halfway round Tesco never mind do a full shop for my family and there’s been more than a few times I’ve nearly keeled over in the car park. For me I park beside the taxi rank which is right near the door of Tesco and when I’m not well the taxi drivers often help me load the car cause they know me and know often I overdo things

Your trying to justify your outburst because someone said something in a forum ?

Your be kind message has gone right out the window.

It happens all the time in here. People escalate a discussion to anger and its usually the virtue signalling people that do that , like a child stamping their feet. Tartan and myself have had an axe to grind with parking and repeatedly explained why but others won't accept that and get all hot under the collar. Tartan and myself both agreed to disagree, the last thread ran it's course but you decided you wanted to continue that discussion but are now losing the plot because we came back in to a topic you reopened. Priceless. !!

I'm not going to argue about the ins and out of specific incidents, especially when I wasn't there and don't have all the facts, but whether the person is in the wrong or not, it's really not your place to confront them. You have absolutely no authority and could put someone in a lot of distress when in actual fact they might have every right to be using the blue badge system.

Also let me ask you a question, if you were deceiving people and passing yourself off as something you weren't for your own benefit would you rather be called out in public or reported privately? Have a think about that one.

I get that and its wrong but to go up and check peoples badges is a bit much, on the other post you were cracking up because someone "looked" fit enough to walk round a shop, you said youd be checking their badge, seriously what gives you the right? If you feel someone is using it illegally then call the appropriate authorities

I'd also like to know how it's even possible to check, the photo is on the back of the badge so not on display, it's also tiny so you'd need to be pretty close to see it. that's just it squiggle , he wasn't displaying it properly, he had in on his survivor and I could see it from standing at the side of his car, I could see his father's photo and name and knew straight away it wasn't the sons badge. If the sons his designated driver he gas to have his father in the car with him if he's using the badge but the son was on his own.

Well that's a unique case and you should've reported him.

The point of these threads are about challenging people without clear evidence they are misusing a badge.

There are numerous reasons a person may be issued a badge and it's not just for mobility problems. I did report him that's why I know he lied and had used his father's badge for his own use and not what it is intended for.

Out of curiosity WHO did you report him too? the police who then told me to report it to North Lanarkshire Council. I was surprised to hear back from the council after the son was fined £250 and was removed from being his father's designated driver, but hey ho, it's the sons own stupid fault for illegally using something that wasnt intended for him to use.

I find it difficult to believe that the council would update you on the outcome That's not surprising but it happened."

There’s a lot of what I’m reading I find difficult to believe

I just confronted my neighbour about not picking up her dog shite.

She's crippled with arthritis apparently and waiting on a hip replacement.

I told her I wanted to see the letter from the hospital or I'd be taking the matter further.

I lend woman my grans blue badge after they’ve had a couple of hours with me. I Ask them to bring it back when they have fully recovered. I tell them to stick it to the back of the rear view mirror n hide the photo part. If anyone challenges them I tell them to name drop my cousin because he can handle himself and is a big name in the central belt

Everyone has a right to challenge what they believe to be wrong . Anyone that thinks otherwise probably goes through life with blinkers.

As for going back to the old I know who you are nonsense, don't bother telling me about it as that would be you challenging what you believe is wrong and make you a hypocrite. Tell the relevant authorities your concerns , you won't be the first or the last. It won't be the first time someone has mistaken me for someone else.

"I’ve only found one car park where you can park for free .. the others you pay the same as everyone else.. just get to park in a bigger bay .. nearer lifts

.

All supermarkets are free to everyone one

.. we always pay unless it is stated on sign .. I’m not special .. just need more room to get out of the car and to get a wheelchair in and out ..

"

He could have been using the badge to collect his father. You can collect or drop of the person whose badge it is and use their badge to do so.

A stoma bag is not the disability , its a life saving measure that's taken because of an illness / disability.

If you’ve watched the Paralympics you would notice that the events are graded so people are matched in groups of similar ability . Events have different classifications T-44 or other code is put after event title . ( I hope this is the answer to your interest in how it works )

For the record this is what's dickish .. it being belittled .. as I previously stated my daughter had a stoma when she was a baby , she got it as a life saving measure as her bowel nearly perforated whilst having a double heart bypass .. if it had perforated it would've killed her instantly and had no option but to have an ileostomy so reducing it to a sarky comment as "Stoma? Shitting into a bag is classed as being disabled and gets you a blue badge? Can someone with a stoma compete in the special Olympics alongside people with no legs?" . If she didn't have the stoma she wouldn't be here today , so aye maybe I am on the defensive when dickishish comments like this get made . Absolute ignorance in my opinion .

Special Olympics is a global organization that changes lives by promoting understanding, acceptance and inclusion among people with and without intellectual disabilities. We unleash the power of the human spirit through the transformative power and joy of sports, every day around the world.

Just a shame that there are some on here who show their intellectual ability by their comments.

Paralympics are for those with a physical disability.

Oh but surely this is a serious crime and must be investigated thoroughly. We can’t have people abusing blue badges and the privilege that it brings.

I’m quite sure our Police Force have much more serious crimes to investigate such as the abuse a friend of mine gets because they are short due to having brittle bones and yes he also has a blue badge. Some people seem to think it’s ok to shout abuse at him and don’t treat him with any respect.

He’s had over 200 broken bones, spent months in hospital and tries his best to not use a wheelchair as that also comes with condescending remarks.

You and wellinever need to get your fact straight before spouting nonsense. Try reading this.

.

.

It is a criminal offence to misuse the badge, and doing so can lead to a £1,000 fine. If the badge holder is using the parking concessions as a passenger (as opposed to driving the car themselves), it is their responsibility to make sure that the driver is aware of the rules governing the scheme.

The badge is for the sole use of the person named on it. It must only be displayed if the badge holder is travelling in the vehicle as a driver or passenger, or if someone is collecting them or dropping them off. The badge may not be used by other people to do something on the badge holder’s behalf, such as shopping or collecting something for them, unless the badge holder is travelling with them.

Don't forget to appologies to the person you called a liar.

"These include but are not limited to

* Psychiatric Disabilities—Examples include major depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, etc

* HIV/AIDS

* Diabetes

* Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

* Attention Deficit-Disrorder or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder(ADD/ADHD)

* Arthritis

* Crohns Disease

* IBS

* Sjögrens Syndrome

* Heart Disease

* PoTS

* Ehlers Danlos Syndrome

I was right in my assumption that the son was using his father's badge for his own pleasure without his father's knowledge..

Did the police phone back and tell you that

Police wouldn’t do that only where someone is required to give evidence would anyone ever know the outcome of any action by the police

That 100% wrong. If you report a crime , they are very likely to update you that that person was charged/convicted ect and also what punishment ie fine or time. Ect. More so if you request an update.

Truck driver reversed over me on nov asked police for an update unfortunately we’re not obliged to tell you what is being done in regards to the other driver however if he is charged etc you will be able to ask for a subject acces thingy so you’re wrong there "

Maybe there's another reason there not telling you , laziness , to busy , legal reason but its rife over the Internet just now. People reporting others for mobile phone rule breaking ect by taking vids and sending them in and being told that the person was charged or fined . Its becoming a hobby for some especially cyclists. Google Gandalf corner for one example. But the police most certainly do give feedback, perhaps not in your case.

Lanarkshire

Maybe you should join forces. Blue badges and mobile phone infractions. You would be in your element
