I was listening to some Neil Diamond and the song came on, Girl, you'll be a woman soon. I used to like that song but on reflection the lyrics are incredibly creepy. Made me think what other songs might not go down too well by today's standards? And does it put anyone off the songs now? |

Makes no sense whatsoever to me how you suddenly find a song creepy now that you previously liked. It's like saying your now suddenly highly offended by something you heard in the playground as a child and contacting the school to complain now. I think people make themselves feel good by finding stuff to be offended by , like your joining the " I'm offended club" expecting others to say ohhh poor your hope your feelings are better tomorrow. The world has gone feckin crazy.
With this particular song, and similar songs, you can hear it at a young age and think nothing of it. Then you maybe hear it as a woman of 47 (in my case) and think it sounds as creepy as fuck. I'm not offended by it. Just think it's creepy thinking of a middle aged guy singing this to a "girl"."
So there was no 47 year old women around when the song was released ? And if there was I'm sure if they heard they like you would have found it very creepy but I can't find any record of such an outcry or lynch mob out to get the singer. Actually he was very popular among the women was he not. Which makes me think it has nothing to do with age but more to do with today's offended at anything society. |

C'mon to fuck.
Do you seriously think I'm one of the "offended by anything" mob?
Plenty was acceptable in the past that we now consider dodgy at best and completely unacceptable at worst.
I like Neil Diamond BTW. This song is just a reflection of the times. |

My point is more about a song suddenly becoming creepy or someone suddenly being offended. Your right miss muff it was a reflection of things accepted in the past and by all means OP you can say by today's standards it wouldn't be allowed and that's a fair comment but no need for added dramatics about it suddenly being creepy to you . Perhaps counselling would help OP. ? |

Ah Zest, always looking to turn a peaceful thread into a battlezone. I didn't say I was offended. Just that on reflection I find the song a bit creepy. Guess I never really thought about it before. I'd hardly call that dramatics but you do seem to have a flair for the dramatic so sure you know best. You seem to be offended that I might be offended... I can give you the name of my counsellor if you like |

Think that's my take on it miss muff, I've got to the age now where it could be my daughter he was singing it to and it jars me. Never really thought about it before. |

The song "Jackie" by Scott Walker.... It's a great song... nothing really creepy about it. But a section of one verse seems to relate to Jeffrey Epstein...
"And if I joined the social whirl
Became procurer of young girls
Then I would have my own bordello..." |

I used to love Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue Wild Rose, as a teen I never stopped to pay much attention to the lyrics.
Now as an adult I find it really creepy!

OP is the song not about a young girl and a young boy in love. Where the family think he is a rogue. He is asking her to make her own decision on her feelings.
Hence making her a woman?
Also it's a very old song and I'm sure Neil diamond wasn't a middle aged man back then.
Just my take on it tho might be wrong on the interpretation.

Haha I might need a therapist the way the world has gone Jen.
No need for a battle ground either just a simple difference of opinions.
Here's another example of crazy, it's crazy because no matter how helpful or well meaning in the past , the current population seem hellbent on finding the bad in everything.
Do They Know It’s Christmas? by the Band Aid choir, 1984
Choice lyric: “And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time / The greatest gift they'll get this year is life / Where nothing ever grows, no rain or rivers flow / Do they know it's Christmas time at all?”
Why it wouldn't fly today: Possibly the most culturally insensitive Christmas song of all time, the Band Aid supergroup may have raised money to alleviate an Ethiopian famine with the proceeds from Do They Know It’s Christmas. But they did it with a song that declares the entire continent of Africa is bereft of water, trees or joy.
Should we ban all publishing of Rabbie Burns, burn his poems out of history and teachings, after all he was a womaniser and misogynistic man if ever there was. Yet we sing auld lang syne every new year and celebrate burns day every year. If your gonna slate the past you should at least be consistant with all of the past and not pick and choose some and be creeper out by some bits whilst celebrating others that are just as bad.

He calls everyone kid. I can’t stick him. He thinks he’s a modern day Frank Sinatra and think he falls into the god awful easy listening genre |

Funnily enough I just thinking about posting a similar thread of songs that you didn't realise were mental!
I was listening to Sunscream - Love U More, which I have always loved then I hear the line "like father's r^pe their daughters" WTF. Also Money for nothing by Dire Straits ( and lets not forget Stings input to that song) as a child growing up I just thought it was a great guitar riff then I listen to the lyrics- "that little faggot etc". Everyone knows the controversial use of faggot in Fairytale of New York as well. But if you listen to almost every song from the 50 and 60's they're all exceptionally dubious in relation to young girls and a hell of a lot of songs about being 16. The piece de resistance though has to be Grease Lightning by John Travolta. If that was to be released today it couldn't get air play (and we allow some really foul stuff on the radio these days), but because it's from Grease everyone thinks it's OK. Holy shit, it most certainly is not - I don't wany my 8 year old daughter singing "the chick's will cream" etc. Then we have Barbie girl etc - it's mental!!!!! |

Everyone thought it was a love song, but it was about a pervy photographer taking advantage on a photo shoot. Baby bird were open about it at the time, but as it was getting so much airplay they made the most of it! |

Sounds like he's in love with a woman and is prepared to wait for her, she may be married or in mourning. And he won't be a bad man to her if they do ever get together. |

Hahaha the innocence of kids though. I remember trying to get my then 8 year old boy to stop singing that Dixon cider song "fill her full with lots of Dixon cider" he had no idea why I was so horrified |

I think it's more reflective on the era that the song was written. An era where many things were common place in main stream media such as casual sexism and casual racism.
Take some of the songs from the rock n roll era and the blues, the like of Chuck Berry, John Lee Hooker, Fats Domino and Sonny Boy Williamson all sang about schoolgirls.
By today's standards they're definitely creepy, but I don't think they should be censored as we need to move on and learn from the previous era's. |

Totally agree was all just a sign of the times, I wasn't suggesting censorship. When you think of some of today's songs like WAP there's not much improvement, just a different kind of yuk |

I'm afraid I don't know who or what WAP is, I'm not up with modern music as I think most of it is mediocre, lol.

All I wanna do is make love to you - Heart
Not only every man's statement here on Fab but also a very creepy set of lyrics when you listen to them.
M x
We made magic that night
Oh, he did everything right
He brought the woman out of me
So many times, easily
I told him I am the flower, you are the seed
We walked in the garden, we planted a tre |

Bruce Springsteen
Hey little girl, is your daddy home?
Did he go away and leave you all alone? Mhmm
I got a bad desire
Oh oh oh, I'm on fire
Tell me now, baby, is he good to you?
And can he do to you the things that I do? Oh no
I can take you higher
Oh oh oh, I'm on fire
Now that is creepy.... |

Don't think that's a creepy one at all. It's about a woman who's partner can't give her a child so she has a 1 night stand.
Aye she basically uses the guy but hey ho. Been done the world over both ways |
