Was it a toy gun or a BB or Airgun?

er...guess

I suppose the risk stems from the fact that what's obviously a toy gun when you hold it in your hand and examine it looks very different when waved in the window of a car passing by at 30 mph.

Once asked policeman to check an unattended bag at heathrow, he bravely looked in it, stood on it then tore it to bits, risk eliminated, no need for paperwork, job done!

Might been easier to treat toy gun the same, ok the kid might of been upset a while but not as bad as the lark with being accused of "having a gun",surely.

having first hand experience of this

i once had involement with the police and courts for a REAL gun with several REAL bullets inside it that was stuck against someones head while they were robbed, they even made the victim touch the gun to prove it was metal and real

this REAL gun was classified by the courts as an imitation firearm

why i hear you ask

because the firing pin had been removed, although the thieves were unaware of this fact as they later told police, they were sentenced to 5 years in jail instead of 15 years because of a little piece of metal that was missing from inside

now that was a joke if i ever heard it but it`s the law of the land, because the gun couldn`t physically fire a bullet it was deemed an imitation firearm

the case above with the childs toy gun is totally different and a joke,it would in my eyes become an imitation firearm with the way it was used,i.e aimed at someone in a manner to cause fear and that the person it was aimed at believed it to be a real firearm, not a child playing with it

I thought all kids toy guns had to have a bright red end on the barrel?

its not the police who are to blame for the procedures when an imitation/toy gun is found but the public as it is not pc now to let your kids play with a toy gun even if it has a red cap on the end.

imitation firearms are made to look as close to the real thing as possible and even from close up you cannot tell the difference, so the police armed officer, even being highly trained cant tell at a glance.and this is what puts folk in danger when the silly buggers wave them at others and are seen by joe soap who then calls the cops to report it.

Anyone who holds or points a gun at anyone even if it is deactvated should be jailed for life not just a few years as it affectes the victims for years afterwards.

"I thought all kids toy guns had to have a bright red end on the barrel?"

it's only held on by glue, easily removed and most of the time is.

I agree that there is no need to buy our kids toy guns, what are we trying to teach them?? guns are fun? the war is a joke?? I think that eventually they're programmed to accept guns as being 'normal'

You only have to look at the 'kids' programmes on tv, power rangers, transformers even gladiators has become nasty! what ever happened to the likes of the magic round about - bring back the stoned rabbit!!

Ok war isnt a joke but in the dim and distant past when some of us on here were ankle biters. Bet we can all still remember playing at soiders or cowboys and indians in the school play grounds.Fact is boys like playing with guns no harm in it. As long as it is taken in the right context.

er...guess

The guns we played with back then looked nothing like the near perfect replicas available nowadays.

Kids used to play cowboys and Indians - now they play drug dealers and SO19.

Think its been a case of over re-action on some ones part and the police, but as has been said before its hard to tell toys from the real thing these days.

Will say one thing though and its in no way a support to carrying guns ..........

But guns do not kill people ....PEOPLE kill people !!

Yeah, but guns make the job a lot easier and a lot more impersonal.

Sorry for my rant, what I meant is that culture seems to have changed from years past where boys played cowboys and indians and it now seems 'cool' to carry a gun, or even neccesary (because of the threat from other people carrying) and I think it stems from childhood, have you heard the advert for the new 'grand theft auto' stylee game, it rhymes off a load of stuff about terrorising people, driving like a maniac, shooting your granny? .... all the things that make america great!

wtf?? when did people start thinking this was great?

really dont see why kids should have toy guns its not as if you training them for something as you are with most other toys and yes im a mum and no none of mine never had toy guns. there was a case here a few wks ago guy robbed a chemist with a toy gun ask the assistants he held up if they would ban toy guns and im sure they would say yes after that experience. in a civil society (well u know what i mean!) there is no place for them just my own personal opinion x

totally agree.... no need whatsoever to teach kids or allow toy guns. yes toy swords are different as you cant kill someone from distance with a sword. have seen and been in contact with replica guns(only difference is barrell is solid) and they aint funny. its horrible that a family can be treated like this due to a toy but surely its better that than some other family losing a loved one to a bullet from some brainless fucker who thinks guns are cool. we are getting far too close to America culture (claim culture) so lets not get any closer regarding guns!!! have fun! xx

from being ex force and been in circumstances were the people around you carry guns day in and day out at night if a kid had to run out an alley way with something in thier hand that looked like a firearm then your mind isnt thinking is it real or a toy,

in sociaty today weapons are so easilly to get hold of u just have to watch the news to see how local its getting.

also after 9/11 and the london bombings do u blame the police and forces for being over zelouse and checking, what would everyone said if they hadnt and the ppl in the car went and robbed a shop or held someone up everyones opinoin would have been diffrent.

so to this end i say good on the police and keep it up as not every replica is a toy.

also replica firearms can be made in to dangerous weapons

a few years ago, a man was shot dead for carrying a table leg.so if the police cant tell the difference between a table leg,and a gun. the people are lucky the car wasnt sprayed with bullets.before the police found out it was a toy gun.

some great an valid points there on where society as a whole should let our children play with guns personaly i have no objection to it an as someone with a bit of a past and has been involved in situations where firearms were involved i can see the darker side of this issue ....but as i read it this is not just about wether we agree or not about guns but more wether the police officers who stopped said car were over zealous in there actions ..surely common sense in this situation would prevail a family of four in a car one child playing with a toy is not the same as a junked up scrottum trying to rob a shop with a similar toy ...surely a police officer has some say in this matter an just because theres a toy in car they need to make an issue of it ??? just ma wee humble opinion fer wot its worth

mate got his first car and we thought it would be a laugh shooting a gat gun out of the window at random passers bye !! hysterical stuff right up till the armed cops showed up surrounded the car and made us all lie face down on the road . before hauling all our asses to jail !! lesson learned i feel !!

and there is your reason why toy guns in fuckwits hands is dangerous!! did u never think that maybe people would just see a car of morons and think it was drug dealers or gangs whatever??? would have been funnier if they had shoved the big gloved hand up your arse!!

I must admit, I am rather with whoever pointed out that gun's are just a weapon, and it's people who kill other people. Anything can be a weapon, a credit card snapped in half, a pair of scissors, a bottle?

My father keeps a shotgun for shooting rabbits and stuff, and me and my brother played with toy guns when we were little. There is no way I would shoot anyone. It's daft to suggest kids playing with toy guns makes them think that war is fun.

Political Correctness has gone mad, soon we won't be allowed to say or think anything for fear that we shall be carted away for being a something-ist!

I will stay in my own world where a joke is a joke, and a toy is a toy. However an imitation firearm to me is only just so because of the way it is used rather than the actual implement itself.

i can handle weapons have done since i was a child both air guns and small guns. the point is that violence encourages violence any psychological study of children eg bandura etc will show that!! school shootings and various other incidents prove this!!

there is no doubt pc has gone mad but if you happened to be drivin along and look round and someone pointin a gun at u is your first thought oh its a fake?? mine would be oh dear iv just wet myself!
