Honestly don't see the point in whatsapp as we get unlimited texts anyway as do many of our friends.
Haven't a clue what kik is
Skype was used a hell of a lot last year when mr was working away from home, was great for the kids but also for us both when they were in bed heehee |

When I got my iPhone I had come from an unlimited text messaging contract that included picture messaging.
I was horrified to receive a bill that contained £40 charges for sending photos etc to my mates as pictures are excluded from allowances now.
That's what makes the likes of Whatsapp fantastic as you can send whatever you like to as many contacts for free. If using wifi there is no hit on data allowances but minimal otherwise. |

Whatsapp is good… but it still relies on your phone number to work… so you kinda still have to give that out to use it. Its better than text's as you get delivery reports (not all networks support them on SMS) and you can send pics/vids for free (as part of your data allowance.
kik works on a username, so you dont need to give out your number, just a username. I found it to be unreliable, messages taking a while to get through and at one point, it was removed from the Blackberry App store for security worries… not sure if its back now.
Skype is good also, no need to reveal phone number yet can make calls to other users with skype (audio and/or video) that will be free on wifi or from your data plan. Can also use it as an instant messanger too.

I was backpacking round the Balkans and whatsapp saved me a fortune. Allowed me to keep in contact with friends and family. All you needed was wifi and as most hostels provided it free of charge I was sorted. Most people I met used Skype for calling home though. Am a fan of whatsapp |

Got em all.
Kik - recent iOS update caused a few issues recently but that's not Kik's fault. I didn't find any issues with Kik itself or Kik Video either. Although it uses your contacts & phone you can have a User Name that doesn't mean folk on Sites have your Mobile Number, just access to the User Name you've chosen. You can delete folk you don't want on it. Bonus.
WhatsApp - paid for this App & it helps me keep I'm touch via WiFi with friends at home & abroad free of charge using data network. Again no issues. Doesn't have a User Name, just uses yer Mob No.
Viber - same as WhatsApp but currently free to download. Can experience some issues on call quality, but I probably notice this more as I have more contacts on this & use more often.
Skype - only ever used on laptop & not iPhone. Really only use this to cam & chat with folk I know abroad. |

Downloaded Whatsapp semi recently and found it great for messaging back home from the Caribbean, on a free wi-fi connection.
Also good for pics and videos which can be a real pain via text. |
