As an Englishman I wonder do people really want to leave the UK I now do you think you’ll get on

It's up to all those living in Scotland to decide the future, not just Scottish people.

One thing is for sure, the way DRoss and Johnson carry on it does not go down well. What is it with DRoss having to be backed up by a non-MSP that sold out to Johnson

Every country should have the right to govern their own destiny and make their own decisions. Unfortunately we have political parties that are only interested in themselves and their own agendas rather than what the public need. As for how he would get on, as a nation of people we could make it work but being guided by politicians from any of the current parties it would be a disaster.

All you need to do is read the political news & look at polling.

You will find some do and some dont.

Pretty much like every political issue.

Ps, there is a politics forum for this sort of question as well, you will find plenty of view points in there.

There's a variety a views. We've all got our own mind and don't agree on everything just because we live in Scotland.

That's before you even include the diaspora.

Hope that helps.

I just want a political party that is interested in getting things working well. Don’t really care where the office is. Just that my kids have good schools and the roads don’t have to meany potholes etc. Very unimpressed by the SNP’s track record. I would vote against further bickering and just want a quite comfortable life.

Unfortunetly the way the current UK government has conducted itself of late has really thrown the cat amongst the pigeons.

Brexit meant pressure in Northern Ireland, pressure that this government denied even existed has broken the union.

By placing a sea border between northern Ireland and the rest of the UK has opened the gates. They cannot be seen as the Conservative and unionist party. Everything argument that have to counter Scottish independence is at complete odds with their brexit stance and Northern Ireland approach.

Devolution is a small step to the natural existence of independence for Scotland. My English partner agrees also.

This.

Whether you like the SNP or not. The only way I see Scotland escaping the constant pillage from Westminister is to back the SNP.

Once we are separated we can vote for people who will do justice to our country and maybe the SNP will still be there and maybe they won't.

But Scotland will be free and voting will be fairer to all Scottish people.

That's what scares Westminster!!!

Some people have a desire to live in a normal nation/state. Some though choose an abnormal setup that has been copied by no other nations in the world.

The Scottish Government have done a better job for Scotland than any Unionist party ever could.

Over the last decade Scottish politics has shifted axis.

It is no longer left v right wing but is now very much Indy v Union.

. . correct. It shocks me how ignorant people are to not realising the damage it is doing and racism it enables... and yet some people think the SNP are doing a grand job, are not sleazy at all and corrupt at all despite all the evidence. All because they believe in a 'confident' voice of leadership that consistently lies, blames and misdirects.

55% of Scots are dependent on State aid that is propped up by the UK. we have the worst health and addiction issues in all of Europe. Education standards are fallen.

It will not be long before People in the South actually push themselves to separate to free up the net gain cash that comes to Scotland... and then the brain drain of people and businesses that will occur.

If Scotland is so bad, such a drain to England is it not strange that a party that won't even subsidise a bedroom want so desperately to keep us? Just makes no sense. Also I find it hard to swallow that Scotland has all these problems and it's the snp fault after 14 years and not the unions fault considering we have been in it for 300 more years. If the union is so great why is large parts of north England wanting change? Why is there a rise in desire for independence in wales? And why is there a rise in calls for unity in NI? it's simply because the union isn't working anymore. Democracy can't be decided just because one part of the union out votes the others. And If anyone doesn't get riled by Douglas Ross' inability to answer a question is be surprised. Says he doesn't want indyref2 so that's it we're not allowed it.....Aye right.

I don't think you are alone in that view. I'd imagine an independent Scotland would need to re-vote on membership of the EU.

To all the SNP and Independence supporters in Scotland please answer this. Scotland currently spends £15 billion pounds a year more than it receives in taxes from the Scottish people. Thats 15 BILLION POUNDS a year. How on earth are you going to make up that money every year?

I'll tell you how. Get independence and everyone in Scotland's taxes will rise (we are already the highest taxed in the U.K.). Get independence and:-

Say goodbye to free prescriptions.

Say goodbye to free higher education.

Say goodbye to the millions received from the Barnett formula.

Say goodbye to the tourist industry. Over 75% of our tourism comes from the rest of the UK and many of them are fed up at being harassed and called names by nationalists.

Our biggest trading partner is the rest of the UK. Say goodbye to that.

Say goodbye to our state pensions. Westminster has already stated that state pensions will be the sole responsibility of the Scottish Government the day after Independence.

Don't say oil is our big money saviour. People working in the oil industry in Aberdeen say it’s worth "shit". Plus, the oil fields are mainly in Scottish waters, but the gas is more or less all in English waters. So, what we make from oil, we lose from gas. Don’t mention wind power as the SNP have already destroyed that industry with the disgusting BiFab fiasco!

What about the 16,000 Defence Jobs that will be lost when Holy Loch is shut down?

What about the loss of highly skilled jobs at BAE on the Clyde and Rosyth?

What about the private companies that would register in England to avoid the damaging taxes and levies that would be imposed on private business?

What about the Banking and Corporate Jobs that would be lost as jobs are relocated South during the transition phase, never to return?

We wouldn't even have our own currency. Don’t listen to MSP Emma Harper who says that credit and debit cards can be used all over the world! But in what currency??!! We can’t use the £ as this is governed by the Bank of England, yes, the England you all hate. They would not allow Sterling to be used by a country OUTSIDE of the United Kingdom, which an independent Scotland would be!

We will have 8% of the UK dept to pay which, due to the last year, is in the trillions. Don’t believe the SNP who say that Scotland won’t have to repay that debt. Try saying that to your credit card company and see what happens!

Go independent and become an instant 3rd world country, run by a corrupt tin pot dictator. A 3rd world country would be the last thing the EU would allow back in. If you don’t have the entry fee, you can’t join the party!

You would literally be like another load of turkeys voting for Christmas.

When all your chips have fallen off your shoulders and you have washed the blue paint off your faces, you would soon realise that all you have done is cut off your noses to spite your faces.

Remember, it was a Scottish King that united the Kingdoms in the first place over 300 years ago.

Even if the SNP get an overall majority today and even if Bojo allows Indyref2 and even if Indyref2 votes in favour of independence, does anyone genuinely think that Spain will allow an independent Scotland to join the EU? To allow that would be to cut their own throats, with a number of regions there wanting their own independence from Madrid.

Scotland would be less independent in the EU than it is in the UK and don't even get me started on the currency! For many years Scots have gone to Scottish Banks and asked for English notes to take abroad. Some places we've visited won't even look at Scottish sterling and others that do offer an inferior exchange rate.

Something I've learned by living in Scotland gor 20 years is that scots have very different social priorities to Westminster and SE England.

Successive Westminster governments have ignored this and treated Scotland as if it were just another region of England.

There's no reason why Scotland and the rUK can't be good neighbours after independence. No need for a hard border. Co-operation on currency during transition. Good trade relations. It would only be Westminster (Tory) spite and sour grapes that would try to make it otherwise, to the detriment of the rUK.

I'm Pro-Indy.

Why did Uk want to leave The EU

Because it wasn’t working for some in the Uk

Mostly England as they had the most population

So it’s the same in Scotland

The UK is not working for people here and as in the EU referendum it should be the people who decide .

It’s Not Boris or the linesman who decides if we get another referendum

As someone who left Northern Ireland to escape the vitriolic hatred and constant bickering that comes with the union/indy debate. I find it quite sad that Scotland is heading down the same road.. nothing comes from this but pain and suffering, and those who would try to convince you that they have your best interests at heart, line their pockets whilst the debate continues. Do people really think the pro union supporters will just give up if Scotland becomes and independent country? Come on...get real, there's too much money in it give up the fight.. meanwhile the average person ends up losing out.

Wise words. I think we should all take heed. I've feared where we may eventually end up for a long time now. "

"What do you Scottish people really think

As an Englishman I wonder do people really want to leave the UK I now do you think you’ll get on"

Its a seriously genuinely deluded ideology owned, pedalled and fed by left wing parties, people and media. Not a single plan for how any of Scotlands extremely costly societal expenses are to be paid for... Its obvious tp anybody with half a brain, and a good lot of their own, that theres a huge hole in the finances and whats worrying is the snp and many of their nutter supporters know full well Scotland wouldnt manage, especially eventually. What drives them is a disgusting bigoted hatred of people who vote conservative, have businesses, assets, savings, or good earnings and they simply wish those people to be taxed and robbed of their money so that it can be given in handouts to those of a lesser work ethic. It really is as simple as that. Its socialism, being ramped up by nationalism.. a destructive combination everywhere in the world where its reared its ugly head. It needs educated out of people. Could go on and on and on but thats the basics. Too high a percentage of stupid people who vote for the snp.

a full negotiation and agreement should be done before a second independence referendum is approved by Boris. If the Scottish people vote to remain - a further referendum should never be allowed for at least a 100 years. Let the Scottish people decide on the exit agreement ahead of any vote and inform them fully on the likely grim facts versus the pipe dreams and delusions of SNPnatz.

The impacts and risks are clear - Scotland does not generate enough tax to sustain itself. Those with wealth would protect it and also likely move elsewhere and intelligent people would go where the money is. Pensions and property would take enormous losses. Taxes would rise and a social marxist republic if oppression would rise that the EU will never accept (Spain will never let Scotland in straight off the bat).

just think about the it....

Question - how many times will there be referendums on this vote? And if they get a 'yes' with 51% like the 'no' vote did last time....will they then hold another one in 7 years incase that two percent want to jump back to 'no' again??

"To all the SNP and Independence supporters in Scotland please answer this.

Project fear.

Every single point is factually incorrect.

Scottish currency is a joke around the world as we speak. What hope of being taken seriously when finally independent and trading with the Thistle or the Bagpipe or whatever SNP decide to call it?

Why will SNP never tell us what currency is being planned? It's a very basic question.

No country that's left the empire has ever asked to come back.

"

Exactly, SNP are a conduit to Independence. Once achieved we will have a variety of parties whose only purpose will be to look after those who choose to live in Scotland, no longer pandering to the south of England. Time will tell whether the Tories actually do invest in the Northern towns of England. “The northern powerhouse”, haven’t heard much about that in a long time.

As the Scottish pound is already valued less than the English pound abroad ( different exchange rates offered around Europe), maybe we should be buying US Dollars or Euros in advance of possible independence, even though I can't see an independent Scotland being accepted into the EU? They are at least recognised world currencies.

Approaching pensionable age, we are both seriously concerned about reserves of cash held in Scottish banks and also what we will get for our retirement income.

Independence has to be sold as a practicality, not just a misty-eyed, romantic dream.

it's not a different exchange rate that's a myth it's pounds sterling regardless of which bank issues it.

It's not accepted as its not in the books that show examples of legal tender from each country.

Some exchanges will use this to their advantage and take the risk on Irish Welsh Scottish pound notes but give a lower exchange rate.

It's "value" is the same as any pound Stirling its simply not in the recognition books used by foreign exchange bureau's

You don’t recognise Scotland as a sovereign nation. That’s entirely fine but the electorate voted democratically in Scotland to remain in the EU.

The turn out figures you talk off you’re saying actually wanted to remain part of the EU so never bothered voting. That’s China material right there.

You can’t back your claim up because zero former commonwealth countries asked to rejoin the commonwealth.

In a debate I ask a question you answer, you ask as question I answer. You can back by facts not rhetoric. In summarising you’ve nothing to convince anyone of your debate.

who's getting personal certainly not me.

I show the inconsistencies in your flawed theories. You throw the Teddy out the cot and claim (as you just have) everyone can see scotland voted to remain in the EU.

We both know the figures so we both know your statements inaccurate.

Of the 67% who could be arsed voting would have been a more accurate statement but that doesn't suit your narrative so you put out what you want believed and claim it as fact.

It's not me unwilling to accept the democratic vote ain't me crying scotland wants to be free.

Gonna put this real simple for you scotland voted to remain within this country.

This country voted to leave the EU. No ifs or buts there it is plain and simple. Though you won't accept that because....... But but but

lol again turnout figures or do you not understand what the turnout figure is? You want a clue on what the 6% is? Don't run around citing figures when you don't even understand what they are.

Jesus looked across the table at God and asked “Where have you been these last months?”

God replied “I’ve been in Scotland”

Jesus with a shocked look said “So for the last year there’s been a pandemic raging and you’ve been in Scotland! Doing what???”

God leaned over and whispered “Working from home Son, working from home”

Oh dear another attempt at misdirection or inability to understand what the percentages are so I will lay it out for you.

Percentage of eligible voters who actually voted in the uks referendum vote on leaving the EU (turnout) 67% of eligible voters.

62% of the 67% voted remain

32% 0f the 67% voted leave

6% were invalid ballots

33% of eligible voters totally abstained from the vote.

Scotlands ballots were added to England Wales and Ireland votes and the return was leave the EU.

No ifs and or buts that's how it is your inability to accept what the people have asked for is your issue not scotlands as you want to paint it accept the democratic votes that happened or keep crying wolf and blaming England and continue to look foolish.

From today's Sunday Times.

'Which currency would an independent Scotland use?

There are three currency options: a new Scottish currency; retaining the pound sterling; and joining the euro.

A new currency now appears to be preference of the SNP leadership'

Very worrying.

I was born in Scotland, grew up in Scotland, live in Scotland. I'm British. I think that answers how I feel.

I think the idea of the nation state has run its course. The problems that need solved by governments are global, splitting the world in to smaller and smaller factions is counter productive and unnecessary.

In my experience Scotland 'piss up brewery organise couldn't'. I think we need to stop being so uppity and accept our place.

"I was born in Scotland, grew up in Scotland, live in Scotland.

Accept our place? At the mercy of Westminster? Fucking hell what a bleak outlook"

Bleak is very worrying I agree, it’s a choice and there would be problems to overcome but I’m sure we’d do it just like every other country that’s freed itself from another. This debate will rage forever whether we stay or leave but what really gets me is the notion that we are subsidised. I can’t help but think why would any county subsidise another to its detriment. We are wanted in the union because we pay our way and more probably. Also if the UK split England would lose what remains of its street cred as a world power. Not the mighty United Kingdom just another wee country. I’m not in the slightest anti English but hate the notion that many have that they “keep” us. Nonsense!!! If it is true (for those that believe that) I’d rather do without something and be master of our own destiny than be cap in hand.

I’ve heard and seen all the arguments for years and that’s my opinion dear forumites so please don’t list all the do’s and donts YOU feel would result should we leave, they are all listed above and the many other threads...

Enjoy your debate

I admire the optimism of the nationalists.

Unfortunately I don't think Scotland will ever be independent.

Sounds like what was said about the Weimar Republic. Not that the term 'muppets' was used but definitely the same sentiment.

"To all the SNP and Independence supporters in Scotland please answer this.

Remember, it was a Scottish King that united the Kingdoms in the first place over 300 years ago."

A Scottish king wanting fame and fortune. If you knew your history you would recognise England/UK has took from all the colonies over and over again. Everyone who leaves prospers!!! All you have said is spout the rubbish what we bring in Tax wise?? Tell me what’s not on that balance sheet??

Hope over Fear don’t be afraid!!

We can leave home and live alone

Since there is obviously such division in Scotland regarding independence, what do people think might happen? Is Scotland likely to break up? Would the border regions become like Northern Ireland and remain part of the Union? Would many people from elsewhere in Scotland move to what's left of the UK. As an example, I think it was about one third of the population of Donegal moved to the UK after Irish independence. Would the Northern Isles separate?

Stockholm syndrome? The South East of Scotland is predominantly Anglo-Saxon after moving in or invading Brythonic Celtic lands. The South West of Scotland is predominantly Brythonic Celtic (ie British) and pretty much the same as what we term the Picts. The Goidelic Celts invaded (or settled if you want to be nice about it) and either wiped out or absorbed much of the Pictish areas.

Then, of course, there are all the Danish and Norse invasions and colonisation etc.

Very similar things happened in what is now England and Wales.

The mix is very interesting and most of us are a mix of these different races anyway.

If there is Stockholm Syndrome, you're looking at it from the wrong point of view.

I hoped that from my point you'd now be considering the different regional settlement patterns by 'race'. For instance, the Lothians and Borders which were once part of Northumbria perhaps represent the idea of Stockholm Syndrome better.

Even the language of 'Inglis' was renamed as 'Scots' but it doesn't make it less Northumbrian and more Scottish despite what people generally accept now.

In 2018 I attended an event commemorating the Battle of Carham which took place in 1018. An allied force of Scots and Strathclyde Britons defeated the Northumbrian and it ultimately led to the border being moved to, more or less, where it is now. However it wasn't official until after the Treaty of York over 200 years later.

Anyway, the point is this: A battle reenactment took place. A young child sitting nearby me was cheering because the 'Scots' won. This child was from somewhere like Kelso or Coldstream ie Northumbrian at the time of the battle so was really cheering on the aggressors and enemy.

voting No certainly does not mean I am happy with the way things are.i vote no because I believe that a Yes vote is not a credible alternative. No plan no policy no ideas. The yes side 7 years later still have no firm policy . The level of competence I see on display on transport, health, policing economy etc certainly do not inspire trust.A vote for yes is based on faith and not a lot else.

exavtly, one of manyies, all they seem to do down there is lie and misinform, no wonder so many people are scepticle about Covid 19, we know our governments cant be trusted at the best of times, so, they dont trust them now either.

Does that make wee nic a liar to then , she's on TV every day talking about covid ??

You don’t vote so nothing you say in politics matters if you can’t back up your words with a X in a box "

As said already ,many many times. If there is no credible option to vote for then I'm not simply going to vote for the least shit option. Neither am I going to deface my vote then send it or take it in as I have no intention of wasting my time . Not even a few seconds of my time. You vote but nothing you say really contributes to these discussions either though. It's either Westminsters fault or but but but replies. So being a voter or not is pretty much irrelevant in lots of cases.

"Everyone can see 62% of 100% is a majority lol 62% of 67% you still attempting to push your narrative.

That's immaterial anyway as the country as a whole voted out the failing project hoooo Ray

The country voted to remain as backed up by absolutely everyone except YOU lol

So why doesn't the vote to remain part of the Union hold the same clout for you?

It seems you like you're only choosing to accept the decision you agree with.

If you recall back the unionists stated the only way to stay part of Europe was to vote NO

One of many lies.

People who don’t vote deserve to get shafted.

I find it highly hypocritical for folk to not back up or disapprove their leanings through the ballot box.

Well it's your suggestion !!

I dont vote for any politicians so the only people that can shaft me are the politicians ,your words , just now that's the SNP. Ps even those that voted are getting shafted by them so brings it back to vote or don't vote, makes no difference. Lol
