So, out walking Sunday and after being nearly blown off hills on Saturday just decided a low level wander through some local streets round a park and then back home.. catching my attention in a number of gardens here and there was the old pampas grass..
Now question is, is this a fable or does anyone think it’s a signal jury’s out for me, I really can’t decide, my imaginative side wants to believe it is... |

I love this, when on holiday in Gairloch I noticed every second house had pampas grass in their front gardens and in the campsite there was one pitch with pampergrass at it, it made me giggle with that thought in my head |

In the 1970s a pampas grass was seen as exotic. It was a new plant and reminded people of their holidays. Remember then there were couples whose holidays was a caravan in Cornwall or some other UK wind swept coast line or a uk holiday camp. Newly married/youger couples that did not have children were the first to try going to Spain for a holiday in the sun. Wall to wall sunshine, margaritas and freedom to undress on the beach. Remember, at Margate in the early 70s, men were concidered racy if they took their tie and jacket off in the blazing sun. And women would peel off there stockings or tights if they were modern. In Spain you could wear shorts and perhaps a swimsuit on the beach. And some of the continentals went Topless (Swedish). There was dancing, clubs and drinks at night and everyone had a good time. So these 'modern' couple would come home to Britain and decode to copy some of the things they had seen on the costas.
So in the back gardens, which traditionally had a yard and a vegetable patch, patios and lawns were introduced to remind yourself of holidays abroad. And people started to sit out in the garden reading and being idle. So modern.
Equally planting changed and out went the roses, forget-me-nots and other cottage plants. First there might be a driveway because you were going to get a car. And the odd Pampas bush because it was exotic and Mediterranean like.
And nudist clubs planted Pampas and it was featured in magazines like H&S, it became linked to liberal thinking. Linked to those who had been abroad on holiday, had a car, tried spaghetti and therefore tried wife swapping. After all they did have dinner parties with other young couples. |
