Top, Bottom or Both?
Jump to: Newest in thread
As an Englishman in Scotland I have been perturbed for sometime now over buttering rolls! I was brought up (dragged some would say) to butter top and bottom, I have met many people in Scotland that only butter the bottom of a roll, for the life of me I can’t understand why only the bottom? No one does the top only. What makes it worse is the fact that when making a sandwich from sliced bread these ‘bottom only people’ butter top and bottom.
Is this one of those mysteries that is, as it is or is there an underlying explanation as to why bottom only? I need educating |

Definitely both
I’ll raise another weird one along the same genre - butter or jam ? I’ve been asked when ordering pancakes or scones... butter or jam ! Are they clinically insane what are they even saying.. surely it’s both items required on those baked goodies |

Exactly can’t have one without the other unless substituting the butter for clotted cream |

Substitute? I’d say clotted cream would be a worthy addition to the butter and jam combination, let’s not be taking anything away here now lol |

Very much depends what's going on the middle. If it's a "wet" filling bottom only will suffice. If it's dry, top and bottom. If it's jam or lemon curd though top and bottom ...
How do you serve chocolate OP. |

Top & bottom unless its for soup then I take it dry
Theres a few cafes Ive been to that only done the bottom, I always assumed they were either lazy or stingy I didn't realise this was actually a thing
The real weirdos are the ones that only toast one side of the bread

I butter the bottom of rolls, bottom on a piece but sometimes I will do the topside of a piece.
I was brought up with only one side done due to financial constraints.
Some people think it's lazy doing one side but is it not healthier also
I don't eat jam unless it's on a scone,always with butter...
Clotted cream, what is the point of it? |

Bottom only. the top is for sauce or pickle or whatever your condiment of choice is in either a roll
( not cob or tea cake or bam or any other misdescription of a ROLL ) or on a sandwich |
