Spiced rum and cola has been my choice of drink forever. However, the time is now here I need to lay off the full fat cola!! Tried it with diet , but started feeling a bit ill after 2 drinks.

So looking for recommendations really. What's your (low sugar) tipple of choice I could try? x

We were in a Rum speakeasy Bar in Australia and I asked the very knowledgeable barman the same question, as wanted to lay off all Cola.

He came back immediately with Ginger Ale or Ginger Beer! And fresh Line's.

You could ditch the fizzy stuff completely and drink panther milk instead

If you are wanting to stay with rum, and why would you want to change, then definitely either dark rum and diet ginger beer or something like an aged rum (Havana Club, Mount Gay etc) with ginger beer. Lovely with or without limes

I actually went through a bit of a Spiced Rum fad recently. If you look round online, most of the online Spiced Rum experts recommend Coke Zero.

My sister recommended water (kind of) Vodka, elderflower, fizzy water and ice.

Gin, vodka, low calorie ginger ale, mango and pineapple rum, diet lemonade added to shopping list. That should see me through the next month or 2 as well

Did try my spiced rum with c*ke zero, but i felt quite nauseous after just 2 drinks. Don't think diet cola of any variety agrees with me.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone x

Discovered malts properly this year and with just a drip of water find that I’m raring to go in morning and still maintain an appetite.

Good man, I also don’t get hangovers with malt whisky. It’s a passionate relationship. The experience, the moment and good conversation - malt whisky

Also great not going for a piss every half hour.

Liking the Islay malts currently and have a distillery map I’m working my way through once travel is permitted again.

I moved from rum and to southern comfort and lemonade many years ago. It’s often too sweet for some but it’s not a million miles away from rum. Just drink it with a decent measure and crap diet lemonade (least flavour the better) so it’s not too sweet

Rum can work pretty well with soda water and a cordial- or hey, a touch of real fruit juice, if you're feeling fancy. Strawberry or blueberry are my favourites.

So there I was, trolley full of (low cal) soft drinks, vodka, mango & pineapple rum and pink gin. Getting strange looks from the woman at the checkout probably thinking I'm planning a big hogmanay gathering, despite being in lockdown

Last night had a go at vodka, elderflower and fizzy water, which was actually really good!! And no hangover today, so off to a promising start.

Next up will probably be my usual spiced rum with low calorie ginger ale.

Thanks again for all the suggestions. They'll definitely see me through the holidays x

I'd get strange looks for that too. They'd ask me if I'd stop buying in bulk.

Soda or slimline tonic but I much prefer lemonade (diet of course).

It is sweet but I likes it

I have also been enjoying a spiced rum and lately (full fat)

Usually Bacardi Carta Negra.

I have also been enjoying a Dark and Stormy (Dark rum and ginger beer garnished with a wedge of lime) Usually mixed with Kraken black spiced rum.

I'm not sure what I could recommend with low sugar as I hate low cal even though I know it's for the best.

Sorry, I have been absolutely no help in this matter what so ever...

Low cal so far only made me ill. Had the hangover from hell on Friday. Maybe i just need to stop drinking alcohol. Or limit to once every 2 weeks and stick to my spiced rum and full fat cola (which never ever results in a hangover) x

Maybe you need to wean yourself off from the full fat to diet varieties. I know a couple people that say they suffered worse hangovers on diet which I assume must have something to do with the sugars?x

I’m by no means best authority on this subject, I hardly drink anywhere near the volume I would once have consumed in my earlier years....

however, I did find that when I stopped drinking anything mixed with cola or diet cola and swapped to either lemonade or tonic I stopped getting hangovers (of which I had some belters)..., now I’ve no idea what the science is behind that but there must be some connection to massive hangovers and any type of cola mixed with alcohol..

That probably had nothing at all do with the post, I just thought I’d give my tuppence worth to the debate lol
