I was wondering whether there would be any female guitarists on here .. I googled to see who would come up ( I really like Annie Clarke /St Vincent n Anna Calvis good ) .Dave Stewart's bearded mug came up somwhat bizzarely (?!!!!) ...I like Maybelle Carter n Carole Kaye .... but why aren't there more prominent ones ? is it more inherently " male "the somewhat obsessive process neccesary to stand out ? is it patriarchal editing by the forces that abide? females less interested ? |

Stef Carpenter & Page Hamilton, love their grooves.
Ben Weinman from The Dillinger Escape Plan. Technically i’ve not heard anyone do what he can do as well live. |

isnt it amazing how personal to everyone that music is! Just look at the names appearing on this thread. Talented people going back for years. music is so diverse & individuals make deep connections with it.
What i love you might say is shite & what you like i might think sounds like a hundred other records!! Ive been to more gigs than i can remember & they all meant something at the time while some stick in your head as moments of magic. Seen sabbath twice, maiden more times than ive got fingers. A metal head like me branched out & went to see james brown live for the banter back in the day. Yip sex machine live with all his dancers & funk going on sticks in my mind as one of the most iconic showmanship acts ive ever watched. i dont listen to the scorpions that much and yet watching Michael Schenker play rock you like a hurricane live & doctor doctor really does stand out as an amazing guitar moment i'll never forget or experience again. I dont listen to oasis but hearing them do rock n roll star at a gig again sticks out as a mind blowing memory to have experienced. If i had to pick just one guitar memory to etch in stone it would be the irons doing the clansman live. Again diverse when an english group can write a song touching the hearts & feelings of being scottish. triple guitar solos, bruce on vocal & steve harris on bass make this my defo best guitar music memory!! |

Ah.. The mighty Maiden! Adrian Smith needs a mention here for his thought out technical ability, Dave Murray for the free running legato style, and of course Janick Gets for stage presence.
Mr Iron Maiden- Steve Harris is a four string god. Bruce the air raid siren on vocals is still at the top of his game even after the throat cancer. And just how does Nicko Mcbrain keep going on those drums at his age? |

My favourite? My 17 year old son. He says the best players are Johnny Marr and Jimi Hendrix. But I just adore listening to my boy playing with his guitars, (3 acoustic, 3 electric plus 3 amps... So far!) I love hearing the joy it brings him, and how much effort he puts in to getting bits right, over and over he never gives up. Everyone will have different answers about their favourite guitarist but as long as they bring out that joy in them, I guess nobody is wrong.
Except the guy who said Ace Frehley. He's wrong ![](/icons/s/twisted.gif) |

Some excellent choices in there, especially like seeing Lou Reed and Helios Creed getting some respect.
I'd add:
Neil Young
Omar Rodriguez Lopez
Nick Drake
Bo Diddley
Lee Ranaldo/Thurston Moore
Link Wray
Robert Smith
Kevin Shields
Andy Bell (Ride era)
I've always preferred guitarists who emote and use noise/layers. Technical proficiency is good but can be very soulless at times. |

"Al Stewart and Peter White, Roger Hodgson and James Taylor all great acoustic players "
Al Stewart just used session players for most of the last fifty years. He is an almost competent chords strummer (which is still saying something!). |
