"What's with the cycling next to each other hogging the road? Can you cycle in a single line please, I also have places to go in the car, thanks
Mrs"
Hi,
It's a common question from non cyclists. If it's a standard road (2 lanes), then riding 2 abreast should cause no delay to a driver as to give sufficient room to a single cyclist the driver would have to move into oncoming traffic. So regardless of single file or 2 abreast you have to wait for the traffic coming in the opposite direction to be clear.
If riding in single file, it takes longer for a motorist to pass, therfore they have to wait for a bigger gap in the oncoming traffic (less common for it to come along). So, it is actually better for a motorist if cyclists ride two abreast.
This is assuming the motorist gives the cyclist the correct space (at least 1.5m / 5 feet) and doesn't try and squeeze past.
I how this explains it.
