Serious question - driving to beach for exercise.

I’m looking for opinions.

With the police in England being advised that driving to a deserted place to take valid exercise is allowed, I have this question...

I have a beach which is deserted even on busy warm days. It is 20 mins by car from where I stay. The surrounding streets beside me are filled with joggers/ cyclists/ walkers and although social distancing is possible, it’s a total PIA as it’s busy.

The beach is 4 miles long, there might be 3/4 other people on it with there doggies.

Would the drive to the beach be viewed as unacceptable? At what point would it be acceptable? Is the beach a safer option?

Half the problems is people driving to beauty spots if everyone does it to avoid then they will be busier, I honestly think stay within walking distance from your home just go at different times, but heh that's just my opinion it's your decision at the end of the day..

Stay at home is the car drive necessary I would think thats a big NO! Beach car parks should be shut in anycase after all those clowns raised the risk to others weeks ago by all going there making it realy busy risking spreading a killer virus when others are trying to stop it.

20 miles in a car when not needed is over the top protect the nhs reduce the risk of car crashes potentialy leading to medical care if you dont need to use the road I would think in this case you dont. Unsure how car insurance would view thw journey if it went wrong as well.

The pressure on the nhs isn't just about the covid 19 patients, you need to think about what happens if you have an accident on the journey to and from or during your walking so emergency services are tied up for something that could be avoided. I know its probably not going to happen but it's the possibility of it. I'd stay home and time your exercise to when its quiet around you.

Couple of family members are police. They've been told to consider car parks and parking near parks, beaches, dog walking locations, etc as hot spots to focus.

I doubt a 20mins drive would be accepted. A PNC check would immediately disclose the distance travelled.

I was recently stopped and the buggers checked the boot for my groceries.

It's not rocket science, driving anywhere that's not necessary is against the rules so yes your journey is definitely unnecessary. Why should you be allowed such a journey but families are locked down , holiday homes are locked down. Not having a dig at you just saying the rules are simple and easy to follow.

Driving to any place even to walk is a no no. Ask the drivers last weekend in a car park near a wood. All thirty cars in the area got a fined. Two had there card even taken if them. Having to use public transport to get home. Cars are for work if you can't work at home plus Shopping. If you breakdown. Your reported to police by AA, RAC, green flag, another's. If your in an accident courts are saying you could end up no car (crushed) and no licence. Big risk for a walk ?

What courts are stating this?

A link to the info would be handy.

Updated guidelines from the polis on “reasonable excuse”

Shopping - What you can do:

Buy several days' worth of food, including luxury items and alcohol

Buy a small amount of a staple item or necessity (for example a newspaper, pet food, a loaf of bread or pint of milk)

Collect surplus basic food items from a friend

Buy tools and supplies to repair a fence panel damaged in bad weather

If you're out on your weekly shop, you won't stopped from browsing the "non-essential" aisles.

The document adds that people have a reason to visit shops as long as they're open so it's not appropriate to stop them purchasing items considered to be "non-essentials".

You can't go out to buy DIY products to 'do up a room'

Shopping - What you can't do:

Police say it is not reasonable to pop out for DIY supplies so you can do up your kitchen, for example.

Exercise - What is allowed:

Going for a run or cycle, practising yoga, walking in the countryside or in cities or attending an allotment

Driving to countryside and walking (where far more time is spent walking than driving)

Stopping to rest or to eat lunch while on a long walk

In some circumstances, exercising more than once per day

You can stop to rest - if you are exercising(Image: PA)

Exercise - What isn't allowed:

Driving for a prolonged period with only brief exercise

A short walk to a park bench, when the person remains seated for a much longer period

Sunbathing in parks is not permitted, but taking a rest during a workout outdoors is permitted.

Police say exercise "must involve some movement".

Sunbathing is not allowed(Image: PA)

Work - What you can do:

Key workers or other essential workers can travel to work where it is not reasonably possible to work from home

Some non-key workers or non-essential key-workers can travel to work where it is not reasonably possible to work from home

Deliver food packages to vulnerable people.

Work - What you cannot do:

People who can work from home choosing to work in a local park

Knock on doors offering to do cash in-hand work

The government has clarified who counts as a key worker and is allowed to travel to work or bring their children to school during the day.

However, some non-key workers have been allowed to travel if they are unable to work from home or if their employer requires them to come in.

The guidelines also states that you cannot work from local gardens or parks while working from home.

Other reasons to leave home - What you can do:

Go to the vet for essential treatment

Move to a friend's address for several days to allow a "cooling-off" following arguments at home

Provide support to vulnerable people.

What you cannot do:

Visit a vet's surgery in person to renew a prescription (where this could be done over the phone)

Visiting a friend in their address or meeting in public to socialise.

Good info

Parts that can be open to interpretation-

Exercise - What is allowed:

Driving to countryside and walking (where far more time is spent walking than driving).

This could be the OP's intention.

Exercise - What isn't allowed:

Driving for a prolonged period with only brief exercise.

What is defined as a long period and brief?

From the info that is given the OP can go to the beach.

My favourite bit-

Police say exercise "must involve some movement".

Not really, fruit pickers have always come from Europe. It’s too filthy for us Brits to pick fruit. If it isn’t picked, it’s going to go to waste and we won’t have any fruit especially important after brexit. I don’t understand why we don’t have all the able bodies collecting govt payouts doing it. It’s actually as much pay as I make per hour as a nurse!

measures that stop the spread should be global its perhaps why the uk figures are so bad in comparison to other countries that adhere to social distancing measures instead of folk deciding to swan off down the beach as they are bored

Quite simply. By saying that she can use this reason to go for a sleep over is making light of the real reason for this guideline. She also appears to be single, so not likely not (though not impossible) to suffer from domestic abuse at home and so in all probability would not have reason to use this guideline.

Therefore she is making a flippant comment about that guideline and the reason behind it "making no sense".

All I read is lots of assumptions on your part to a lighthearted take on the guidelines in written form from a poster who you know nothing of her personal circumstances.

The guidelines are open to interpretation. You take your assumptions and let others take theirs. At no point did she conflict domestic abuse with the interpretation.

Yes, you're right. I did state and explain my assumptions in my last post, though. Ask reasonable i think.

The one assumption I made, and I stand by, that i didn't explain, is that both you are the person who made the original comment are intelligent and articulate individuals.

In my opinion you are both able to make the connection.

I may be over sensitive about this topic, but I still think it was a poorly thought out and made comment.

This is my last post on the subject as we're not getting anywhere. I will let you have the last word and I will read it, but not comment as I feel we're antagonising each other for little reason or gain.

Now your being silly, I'm not asking you to take my word for anything. I'm saying you are selfishly ignoring the advice from the Scottish, cmo, UK cmo, advice from the Scottish government, that advice being : if you need to exercise or walk dogs , the advice is stay local and avoid unnecessary travel, again it's not rocket science, driving to anywhere can't be local otherwise driving would not be necessary. If you are driving to a local place then again driving there would be classed as unnecessary travel as you could wlk. Regardless of what your police offer said you are still selfishly breaking the rules either way for your reason for driving . Capesh.

You are being silly. I am far from foolish and done a mental risk assessment for my dog walks. The drive takes probably under 6mins and the walk would take about 30mins with 2 dogs who sniff at every lamp post and wall they see. I live beside 2 shops and a school which is still open. By walking i would pass many people. Driving is by far the safest option in my eyes so i will continue to do it.

I live near a popular walking destination.

It's mayhem here - cars everywhere - busier than usual - actually busier than in the local town.

Even got mountain bikers driving out with bikes obvious to see on their cars - saw one who had hurt himself - I didn't stop to help even though I am qualified to do so and I even saw a group of 3 guys meeting up to go mountain biking!

An earlier poster is right - it's not essential. You run the risk of having an accident meaning you, potential occupants of other cars, the fire brigade, police and potentially numerous ambulances, A&E staff etc etc all needlessly being exposed.

Then you could have a breakdown needing AA help and you will eventually need to fill up - yet more chances of exposure.

And all so you can go for a walk somewhere different.

It's shit like this that has led to an extension of the lockdown and also to more deaths than were necessary and the overloading of the poor NHS staff who are in tears on the TV all the time asking us not to go out.

I know the argument is that you are unlikely to have any incidents and will take precautions but A&E departments are full 365 days a year with people who didn't plan to be there.

Driving to go for a walk is just one of thousands of unnecessary things people are doing which must lead to hundreds of millions of unnecessary things being done across the UK every day all of which carry a small risk. It all adds up to real infections and deaths and not just of the people doing unnecessary stuff.

Just stay home.

Also, the recent police guidelines are unhelpful. What stupid cretin thought that up?

None of the examples above about the risks of driving unnecessarily seem to get through so let's make jokes instead. Nice. !!

Back to the original question. The beach is not frequented by many and it is off the beaten track. It’s not one of the popular beaches.

Yes the distance to get there is questionable but the walk can be good for mental and physical well being.

"I’m looking for opinions.

Is the beach a safer option?"

I wouldn't chance a 20 min drive...my car cut out at the lights the other day on the way back from the local supermarket and panic set in. All I could think of was what it would be like if I'd been stranded further away or in a bump.

That's just me though....I'll admit I'm slightly paranoid at the moment.

You could breakdown, crash whatever if you drive but you could also trip over, get knocked down or get mugged if you walk locally.

Today I seen 6 police officers standing together talking on the Paisley road west outside a roll shop near their station. There was also 4 or 5 people waiting to get in as well. There was no social distancing and the police weren’t to bothered about anything other than their rolls.

I don’t know if anyone who has been stopped, questioned or anything like that.

If you know for sure the beach will be quiet I would go but there’s a lot of people with the same idea to go to local quiet places making them very busy

You admitted driving 3 times a day to walk your dogs, there and back every day for the last 4 weeks how much time would that driving add up to ? . All of which any journey no matter how short could have ended like doggy's experience. But hey you could just make up more dog jokes while waiting for the AA or RAC or some poor relative or friend to bail you out from your unnecessary journey you feel you must take every day.

There is a country park and woods a 5 min drive from us, or the river is the same distance. We either go there or to woods a little further away, about 20 mins.

We live in the middle of a housing estate, there are more people walking the streets than at these places, with the exception of the river which can have pockets of people at points, so we try to minimise that as much as possible.

The health secretary has been on tv saying this is ok as long as common sense is used, so until that direction is rescinded we will do this for our daily exercise.

The police and the government need to clarify their message and work as one. The majority of us are social distancing as much as possible, unlike the police and crowds on london bridge last night doing their clap

As for people clapping on bridges close to one another and police gathering outside food joints

These are simply examples of others bending the rules to make them fit

But the guidelines state-

1.Exercise - What is allowed:

Driving to countryside and walking (where far more time is spent walking than driving).

2.Exercise - What isn't allowed:

Driving for a prolonged period with only brief exercise.

So if you live in the city, driving to the countryside and spending more time walking or exercising is OK as that's what the guidelines state in rule 1.

The second rule could cancel its self out as conflicts with the first rule.

Driving for prolonged periods.

Even if the journey takes more than 20mins technically it could be justified as you would be complying with rule 1.

Totally open to individual interpretation.

Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)

By (user no longer on site)  over a year ago

You have to ask yourself what is the object of the guidelines - is it just to simply stop unnecessary journeys, or is it to prevent unnecessary journeys that lead people coming into contact with one another?

I'd say the latter, therefore if where you normally exercise/walk your dog means you are more likely to come into contact with other persons, then going somewhere quieter actually becomes a necessary journey.

Surely common sense applies here - why stick strictly to the word of the guidelines if it means coming into contact with dozens of folk, when you can avoid it by bending the guidelines slightly to have a safer outcome.

I get it, but its a bit bloody pedantic. It'd be very different if you are heading off tens of miles to go somewhere that is a beehive of activity, but if its just down the road to an isolated spot more power to you.

Unfortunately I think its because the 'rules' leave a lot of room for interpretation meaning that a lot of forces don't feel they can be strict with it. We do not have a lockdown anything like Italy etc. The majority of people are doing the best they can in the situation they have

It seems that various police forces are following different guidelines, I wonder why? Shouldn't they all have the same rules?

Unfortunately I think its because the 'rules' leave a lot of room for interpretation meaning that a lot of forces don't feel they can be strict with it. We do not have a lockdown anything like Italy etc. The majority of people are doing the best they can in the situation they have "

I hadn't even noticed the rainbow emoji!

"You have to ask yourself what is the object of the guidelines - is it just to simply stop unnecessary journeys, or is it to prevent unnecessary journeys that lead people coming into contact with one another?

I'd say the latter, therefore if where you normally exercise/walk your dog means you are more likely to come into contact with other persons, then going somewhere quieter actually becomes a necessary journey.

Surely common sense applies here - why stick strictly to the word of the guidelines if it means coming into contact with dozens of folk, when you can avoid it by bending the guidelines slightly to have a safer outcome.

I get it, but its a bit bloody pedantic. It'd be very different if you are heading off tens of miles to go somewhere that is a beehive of activity, but if its just down the road to an isolated spot more power to you."

Just melted my tiny brain jumping between the GOV and SGOV websites and the both have similar guidelines, but you can easily pick holes in both.

Like someone has said above certain police forces are dealing with it differently.

Where i am in Lincolnshire at the moment I've never seen the police since the lock down was put in place.

"There is a country park and woods a 5 min drive from us, or the river is the same distance.

The advice and guidelines are clear. Essential travel only. Driving 20 miles for a walk in the woods isn't essential.

Yes they are, having a walk in the woods is fine if you're staying away from other people, as repeatedly stated by the health secretary.

And I'm not travelling 20 miles "

Apologies,I meant 20 mins, not miles. Still the same though, non essential travel which is advised against. Lots bending the guidelines to suit themselves which is selfish and irresponsible.

It's not just the point of driving somewhere 20 mins away or less to take dogs a walk, accidents happen in cars which will lead to police and ambulance being called out to an accident then possibly needing hospitalised . So something that could be avoided should be.

Its a partial lockdown 3 weeks first now another 3 weeks why? Because people are just not listening and understanding STAY HOME AND STAY SAFE!!!, how hard is that to actually understand

though, it will continues if not much change is happening. Well there another 3 weeks added on, it's not because thing have improved now is it? .

If kids have to stay at home and only allowed out for a wee family walk for one hour then dogs who some class as their babies should to a hour walk is better than nothing for now, kids are used to being out 6 hours a day to now being only allowed out for a hour big adjustment for them so all do the same .

If people don't start listening and actually understanding these rules before we know it it will be full lockdown and no one will be out for any walks, it's that simple.

Not having a go at anyone but we meant to be trying to keep safe at all costs. Means staying off the road unless you have to go for food or to work.

If everyone starts bending a wee rule here and there, it's gonna force full lockdown and then it will get tough for everyone.

Try reading a paper. It's happening right now. Last week several cars in England have been crushed. Only two in Scotland so far. Seems like stories like this are put in small boxes. As footballers wife's do dressing up or a none talented non person from TV land dose some other things. Gets more news space.

To everyone that has replied thank you for your opinion.

I have not nor intend to go to the beach.

But to give you some other information.

Where I stay the surrounding streets are that busy the local residents association is asking people to jog/ walk in the respective pavement as per road vehicles, to minimise potential contact.

Yes it’s that busy.

The nearby parks are heavily policed,

The highlight of my week is painting my toenails and going to Tesco,

I have been working from home for what will be 6 weeks - tho work has ceased - I am now working on a start up programme for return to work. So I’ll be patient and wait for normality to return as there’s allegedly light at the end of the tunnel.

Links are not needed if people understand what STAY HOME AND STAY SAFE mean, essential journeys only such as work and food shopping.

Even shopping for kids birthday presents isn't essential right now, people are having to order things like this online or pick them up when out essential shopping.

Everyones routines and lifestyle has changed, to get this virus to buggery, the quicker the better.

Links and guidelines are everywhere and been posted on other forums too, even insurance companies are now changing things.

"Drivers who make non-essential journeys could void their insurance, UK top lawyer warns"

So best to check insurance before getting behind the wheel. Its on RAC website and few other car insurance websites etc... Probably best to check as some state.....

"Essential travel is largely defined as shopping for necessities, picking up medical suppliers, caring for a vulnerable person and getting to and from work if you cannot do so from home.

"Anything else is not really acceptable so if you have an accident and cannot prove that your journey was essential your insurance may be void."

So a car par park near a wood, all 30 cars were fined. For what?

2 of them had there car taken from them. Seized by the police?

If you breakdown the AA, RAC and Green Flag will report you to the police. No announcements on any of the there websites.

If you are in an accident courts are saying you could end up with no car and no licence. What courts , sheriff Court, High Court, Tennis Court.

I was going to say you couldn't make this up, but clearly you did.

Just checked with Admiral.

They have quite an extensive few pages detailing what to during the pandemic.

Nothing says my insurance will be null and void if i use my vehicle, unless it is out of road worthy condition and does not have a valid MOT or Road fund licence.

If I have an accident I will be subject to the standard policy procedures.

So it would be the police that make decision on how to prosecute.

Which is correct.

The Foreign and Commonwealth office (FCO) has now extended the advice against all but essential travel for the foreseeable future. A claim under your travel insurance can only be considered if you are due to travel in the next 28 days. We can’t provide any advice on trips that are due to start more than 28 days in the future - this is because the FCO advice can change at any time.

I have to agree there is some amount of speculating that goes on in here.

Being a pandemic there is only one thing to really talk about which has been done to death now.

People add wee bits here and there to make their own experience different from everyone else.

January even February nobody would have given a toss about how many times Margaret has been out with the dog.

Or the fact you could go to the toilet in the knowledge that there was loo roll beside you.

There are things in place re coronavirus with most car insurance companies. Questions are being asked and answered by the insurance companies, my info wasn't from news it was from an actual insurance company after checking what was stated on all the news papers, double checking.

You've accused someone of making things up, no one made this up we are seeing and hearing and looking at things that are being said, printed and advised.

Why would you think for a minute insurances companies wouldn't have something in place when everything else has changed, how else will they reduce drivers driving about uneccessarily .

If someone is just driving about for no reason other than pleasure and has an accident, then they are entitled to be covered?? , i think not not when it states otherwise.

No one was on high horse. Its frustrating when some think Stay home and Stay safe doesn't mean just that, if we are asked to do this to prevent further deaths then isn't this what everyone should be doing not just some who think rules don't apply to them.

So a car par park near a wood, all 30 cars were fined. For what?

2 of them had there car taken from them. Seized by the police?

If you breakdown the AA, RAC and Green Flag will report you to the police. No announcements on any of the there websites.

If you are in an accident courts are saying you could end up with no car and no licence. What courts , sheriff Court, High Court, Tennis Court.

I was going to say you couldn't make this up, but clearly you did.

I will let you proceed with profanities and insults

Its the insurance companies you have to contact. He actually never made that up as it was also on my news notifications on my browser last night. However I don't believe the media news so I looked into this myself and it is actually happening. So best people check thier own insurance company.

My post wasnt aimed at you in particular. There were numerous posts where people have put their own twist on the rules to suit themselves on both sides of the debate. Stop being so defensive. I am not stupid enough to no realise that every industry has had to make adjustments to their service or provision. I think you will find it's an opinion that the insurances wont pay out. This has not been advised or confirmed across the board so it is unhelpful to sensationalise this information. Exactly the same as taking the rules to a literal black and white. Everyone has their own way of coping. We shouldn't judge people who are using common sense ffs. I'm absolutely correct in saying I and everyone else are still allowed to think for ourselves and protect ourselves from unnecessary risk.

And just to be clear I am not bending any rules am staying home and keeping safe. We were in lockdown before the government advice so have basically been in for 5 weeks. Maybe this has made me a little cranky with all the pish and misinformation spouted all over social media but heyho we all have opinions, but that is exactly what they are, opinions. Ramming them down folks throats is more likely to polarise those opinions than gain consensus, again an opinion.

I'm saying no more on this as I know you like to get the last word so you are welcome to it. Stay safe

"I’m looking for opinions.

Is the beach a safer option?"

_vcarol…. yes this is acceptable

Matt Hancock said on Friday 17/04/2020 that going out rules have changed

He stated on news and tv that you can drive to the countryside for a walk as long as the walk takes longer than the drive to get there

so

if your drive is 40 minutes, as long as you walk an hour, its acceptable

you will find this report online as well

so get your ass down to your deserted beach and enjoy your walk

If you drive 30 minutes each way to exercise for an hour it's not in line with the new restrictions

If you drive 5 minutes each way to exercise for an hour it's acceptable providing you have just cause for not being bake to exercise within your local area

Ie issues with crowded spaces and you live in a highly populated and busy area, have disabilities and the terrain isn't suitable, have a dog with behavioural issues, are going to beach to do open water swimming, are taking young children cycling and need to avoid dangerous roads etc

If its completely legit and its not just a case of I fancy a nice quiet secluded walk for no other reason than its nicer and the exercise time outweighs the travel its acceptable

"There is a country park and woods a 5 min drive from us, or the river is the same distance.

The advice and guidelines are clear. Essential travel only. Driving 20 miles for a walk in the woods isn't essential.

Yes they are, having a walk in the woods is fine if you're staying away from other people, as repeatedly stated by the health secretary.

And I'm not travelling 20 miles

Apologies,I meant 20 mins, not miles. Still the same though, non essential travel which is advised against. Lots bending the guidelines to suit themselves which is selfish and irresponsible."

Trust me I know the original poster very well . it's more that few weeks it's been going about.

If your friend typed this more than a few weeks ago can you ask them to consult the crystal ball one more time and tell us all when lockdown will end please. The point 11 about tigers catching covid only broke on the 6th of April only 2 weeks ago, could it be she told you a wee porky ? or do they really have a crystal ball ?.

"

Who said it was a she??? The cat was before april and the tiger was on media before it went to papers 6th April actually, you clearly just go off what's on the news and in papers, top feeds . If you actually check, the questions where being asked about tigers getting infected on the 30th march, 2nd and 5th of April few weeks ago, The bronx zoo tiger was infected before 6th April, they only publisized between the 2nd and 6th april.

"Yes I actually know the person who typed it . Ive obviously copy and pasted it from them since I said it was a friend who typed it.

"

My apologies for saying "she" just most clairvoyants are female but point taken.

As for your second part of your post, none of the dates you quoted are over a few weeks so I'm still puzzled.

Or does your friend have a direct contact with the bronx zoo during testing of tigers and even knowledge of a positive test in tigers prior to the dates it was made public. If she knew tigers had tested positive before it was revealed on the media then I'm amazed she typed her list especially point 11 as her way of breaking this very important worldwide news.

I'm afraid it doesn't really ring true.

Thats fine if it doesn't ring true to you but if it was breaking news on the 6th April, I can assure you the tiger didn't get tested on the 6th april And how long does it take for tests to come back??

We all know that things get leaked and some things get removed. UK always get the news last. It was in new York, how long before we find out in UK?

The tiger is actually my pal, Tony, and he says he actually caught covid 19 in November last year. Had all the symptoms after taking his dog out for a 2 hour walk a few days previously.

I think you will be safe from getting it from a tiger. Personally I'll ALWAYS stay way more than 2 metres away from it and if it decided to break 2 meters rule 1. Who is going to argue with it and 2. The virus would be the last thing on my mind

"Took the dogs their run in the car for their walk..didnt crash..result!! "

I've got a new plan, not going to call out your stupidly any longer. I'm going to order on line a big box of fireworks and see if I can scare you away by setting them off . Seen this idea on another thread. I reckon it's a winning plan.

What difference does it make if its beach or park or countryside. Have higher risk of catching the virus standing in a queue in shops than out in open.

"I’m looking for opinions.

_vcarol…. yes this is acceptable

Do you have a link for this please mate?"

This is England - it's different in Scotland where it is not acceptable to drive any distance to go for a walk.

Police near me are moving folk on, leafleting parked cars and fining anyone who doesn't comply.

This is just one of many things that people are doing that don't comply with the lockdown and every time someone doesn't comply the length of lockdown and the amount of time before each stage of relaxation gets longer.

FFS just stay at home!

Edinburgh.

Ha ha. How attitudes have changed. B&Q has opened and there’s an awfully large amount of people who are making “necessary journeys” there. Frankly the social distancing has become a joke.

I suggest you phone 101 direct like I done

I explained I was driving 35 minutes to an isolated location to walk my large dogs who do not get on with other dogs, I explained I fully understood lambing season requirements and that where I walk, I can walk for 2 + hours in one direction without coming into contact with anyone

I said I take gloves and hand gel with me for opening closing gates, and my phone number is displayed in car window, should police check parked car

I asked if this was okay, they replied that I was taking a sensible approach and that they have no problem with this and to go ahead

sometimes common sense is needed

This is where its getting confusing.

I thought there was one verified source and that was the direct government website.

From what I'm reading here Scotland has different rules from the rest of the UK.

You’re right, the college of policing guidance is for England only, however barring some small details, the statutory instruments (the law which sets out what is and isn’t a reason to leave your home) are pretty much identical.

The law in Scotland is silent on how long you can leave your house to exercise, and how you get there. The college of policing guidance would seem to be quite sensible interpretation.

Ultimately it would need to be tested in court, but those cases will be months away, so in the meantime we have common sense and guidance.

If police are ticketing punters on matters on which the law is silent, then those cops are over-reaching. The Chief Constable has been quite clear (on record) on the policing style he expects from his troops.

I’ve seen a few folk commenting about how they’ve phoned 101 to ask for advice on this law. There are 5 million folk here - if everyone phoned to ask, we’d quickly have jammed up emergency services phone lines. There is plenty advice and guidance on government websites without needing to “just check if I’m ok to...”.

I would urge the opposite. Phoning 101 to have this conversation or similar is taking up valuable time which should be spent taking calls from people who need the police to help them.

glasgow west

what is being said now is that any travel for exercise should be appropriate so if you are an athlete that normally would train for hours at a time about an hour is not going to do you any good so you can go longer. traveling for 20 mins - ie 20 miles or so and doing a dog walk of 30 mins is not on and you could find that if you were in an accident or stoped by the police that you will not be covered by any insurance due to it being non essential and the insurance company will disown you .

in wales cyclists have been told to stay local so that if they have a failure they can walk home .so they cant go for a 100km ride and think it is fine .

as you are only going for a walk live with the inconvenience of others doing the same as you and stop being selfish the beach is not local so hard luck

It’s interesting you mention Wales. They’re the only nation to introduce a limit on the number of times you can leave for exercise- only one. The others are silent on that point (so Scottish dogs can be walked three times a day...!)

Will say this again for the folk scrambling for an argument..I also spoke to the police ..I didnt call them I saw them out so stopped and asked I drive my 2 dogs 5 or 10 mins from my house to walk them in a wooded area no one around so no contact with anyone walking them there I would come into co tact with folk so easier to take the car..they said that was perfectly reasonable and that they are urging folk to "use common sense" which is not driving 20 miles away for a 10 min walk.

Christ everyone is an expert on a sex site if in doubt ask the proper authorities.

Ok, so here is a recent press release from Stirling Council. I saw something similar from East Dunbartonshire

https://stirling.gov.uk/news/2020/april-2020/more-rural-car-parks-closed-across-stirling/

The point is - it's all not essential and is the tip of the iceberg as regards conforming to lockdown - whether legally or in spirit.

It will all result in lockdown lasting longer.

Driving unnecessarily can result in accidents, breakdowns, need for fuel etc all of which results in contact and spread of the disease and means that they can't relax lockdown on say, small shops opening or dentists/opticians doing non emergency work.

Nobody NEEDS to drive anywhere to go for a walk.
