Digging a veg garden

Koh Lanta

Due to it becoming clearer and clearer to me that there will be a major shortage of fresh vegetables and fruit in the shops over the coming months due to problems getting the crops in, myself, daughter Becca, friend Andy and his daughter Chloe who’ve been staying down here with me since before this lock down begun have made a start on setting up a large vegetable plot in the garden, our intention being to pass on any surplus to friends, neighbours and the local food bank and in order to make it easier for us to prepare the veg plot I’ve invested in a 1400w electric rotivator that I’m expecting being delivered over the next couple of days.

If anybody local to Jedburgh is thinking along the same lines as us and considering establishing their own veg garden and think the use of a small electric rotivator would help them with this, once we’ve finished our plot, I’m happy to lend you the rotivator for a couple of days if you haven’t got one so your job will be a lot easier, with me being able to drop it off in your driveway and observe the self-isolation rules doing so, (same picking it back up), so give me a shout if you would like to borrow it, the rotivator may as well get put to as good a use as possible while all this is going on rather than be stuck in my garage once we have finished with it.

I've got a large vegetable plot and grow loads of veg in it. The neighbours love me as I drop off the surplus to them.

My next door neighbour has 7 cats.

I’ve built a chicken wire surround for mine

Amazing gesture !

We’ve just started a small patch in our garden, if it works well we’ll dig out the bushes and replace with veg.

If you trying to grow onions from seed, place seeds in kitchen roll and plant, or get old egg carton and little bit of soil in each section put one seed in each, leave on window for 5 or 6 weeks then plant.

Fastest way is get old onions that have started shooting, peel down to the young bulb, place in water for week until you see roots then plant in garden.

I do from seed and veggies that are due to spoil.

Yes wasn't going to bother this year with Polly tunnel as had much motorcycling plans away.

But virus kicked us into touch but hard to find seeds as demand through the roof. Some EBAY sites out of stock.

Cobbled enough though to get in to production yeah!

Nice thread.

Use seeds through veggie and fruit waste, tomatoe seeds, butternut seeds, pumpkin seeds, potato halves with eyes, carrots etc.. etc. There are loads you can plant from your veg and fruit selection in the home that is about to turn bad.

Great gesture Holmey .. I hope we all go back to nature and start growing veg , flowers , herbs instead of the concrete jungles that are now the norm

Iv always just used sets, Stuttgart giant had the best experience with but then it went moldy, think maybe not enough air flow around them. Garlic and leeks are amazing !

Well done, glad to see you enjoying the "Good Life"

I am lucky to have 3 acres of garden, and a small part of that sectioned off for crops, once you get it established you will love it and the crops taste so much better and very rewarding.

You should consider a section for chickens too, fresh eggs each morning

As I was out mowing yesterday I briefly considered where would be suitable for a vegetable patch. Also pondered on the idea of raised beds. Then talked myself out of the idea. This year I think I'll just concentrate on trying to prevent it turning into a jungle & focus on growing what I can in the greenhouse. Tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, chilli, garlic and an assortment of herbs so far. A friend gave me some aubergine seeds which I might try.

Used to keep hens which were fun and it was great having daily eggs, but I'm not sure where I could safely get point of lay pullets just now so at the moment I will continue getting fresh eggs from the nearby farm.

While I haven't 3 acres, I've a decent sized garden and another lawn I could, (but would rather not), dig up, but with my house being on a 3,500 acre agricultural estate I'm tempted to ask the estate manager if they will let us use 1/2 an acre as a communal garden for the other estate property residents and local villagers.

Don't know if they will be up for it, especially with the Estate owner being an absent Austrian Count who's massive manor house is only occupied 6/8 weeks a year, but I suppose I can ask

As for chickens, I've thought about that, but round here unless I build really strong hutches, the foxes will have them. I do have a burn running through my garden and have considered introducing some ducks to it though, would anybody have any advice about duck keeping? I love a pickled duck egg
